Actually the real history behing de smart is that Nicolas Hayek CEO of Swatch wanted to create a Swatch Car, they came up with the concept and then started looking for a company to build it, VW was the first company that started with the project but there was a change of managment and they cancelled, then Mercedes Benz took over the project, Swatch and Benz created the MCC (Micro Car Company) wich later became part of the Daimler-Benz group. The Smart was launched in 1998 as a new company and new brand, at the begginig few people knew that the car was a creation of Swatch developed by Mercedes Benz.

[...] It seems Chinese car maker Shuang Huan, or in English ‘Double Rings‘ has been busy. We didnt see this one at the Beijing Auto Show! It seems that Double Ring has created a replica a model very similar to the Smart Four Two. The Double Ring model, named ‘Xiao Gui Zu‘ or ‘Little Aristocrat‘ is a city car with very much the same customer target as the Smart in Europe – city living folks who don’t need a huge car and who are environmentally aware. China Car Times has known for a while that if the real Smart were to come to China it most surely would be a HUGE hit with middle class Chinese women aged 18 to God knows what. Hell, I like this Little Aristocrat so much, I think I’ll buy one myself. At least this design is only inspired, and not a complete copy like the last Smart clone was. [...]

Coincidentally, the predecessor of the ‘smart’ was the ‘swatch’ car (remember those swatch watches?), which was supposed to be an electric car originally. DaimlerChrysler took it over and created the ‘smart’ in a petrol and diesel version. They are currently experimenting with an electric model in England that was engineered by Zytek.
