China Daily is spreading the news that China will become the third largest producer of cars in the world in 2007 after America and Japan. What does this mean? Not a lot really - well yes it does, it shows that China has developed its automobile industry to shove a whole lot of big Asian and European players by the wayside.
China’s auto industry has grown so rapidly in the five years since the nation joined the WTO that it will soon become the world’s third largest auto manufacturer behind the United States and Japan.
Since 2001, China’s annual auto output has tripled and the nation has gone from being the fifth largest car manufacturer in the world in 2002 to the fourth largest in 2005.
Over the last five years, China has fulfilled its commitments to the WTO by adopting a series of measure to further open its auto industry. In the first 11 months of this year, China produced 6.65 million cars, putting it on track to reach 7 million for the year, making China the world’s third largest auto manufacturer behind the United States and Japan. China is expected to sell 6.4 million vehicles this year.

Chery just (well, yesterday) announced the new Chery F11 but we’re having internet issues here (along with the rest of asia!) So we were slow off the mark, but Erik from Chinesecars.net clearly wasnt:
With Chery releasing this F11 - they have opened a can of internet worms - People are asking are Chery going to make a ‘top class’ brand as Honda with Acura or Toyota did with Lexus or Nissan with Inifiniti? The Chery F11 will come with a choice of a 3.0 V6 engine or a 4.2 V8 engine. The design and the engines were developed in house by Chery. Check out the interior:
No word on the Chinese prices yet, but China Car Times can put in a conservative guess of around 400 - 500k RMB. Hats of to

In news thats almost certain to make Malcolm Bricklin cry, and probably throw some more mud Chery’s way. Dodge has announced the worst kept secret in the automotive world - Chery will build the Dodge Hornet for Dodge. Does this mean that the Dodge Hornet will be available in China? We hope so, although it will most definitely come with a super marked up price just like the new Mini and the new VW Beatle did. This piece of news puts more confidence in the minds of consumers that Chery can compete on both price, and quality and safety alongside the rest of the worlds ‘auto giants’
Heres a news extract from China Daily:
DETROIT - DaimlerChrysler AG’s Chrysler Group and China’s Chery Automobile Co. have agreed on a plan for the Chinese manufacturer to build small cars to be sold worldwide.
The cars, which already are being designed, would be based on an existing model but will be modified jointly by Chrysler and Chery engineers, Chrysler spokesman Jason Vines said Friday. Chrysler is taking the lead on the design and will ensure that the vehicles meet high quality standards, he said.
They will be sold at Chrysler dealerships in the U.S., Europe and elsewhere under a Chrysler Group brand as either a Dodge, Chrysler or Jeep.
Chery will build tiny cars known in the industry as “B-cars,” but it also may build something larger for Chrysler, Vines added.
In other news, our internet still doesn’t work properly and the same for all over China by the looks of things, but on the bright side we’re going to pay a visit to the Roewe dealership later today.

Sorry for the prolonged delay in posting news stories to China Car Times. That quake really messed up the internet for us, and to top it off, our fax machine has died.
We’ll be back soon enough.
Best Regards,

The 7.2 magnitude earthquake off the southern coast of Taiwan the other night has severely affected our ability to conduct business here in China - we cant at the moment research news or even collect our email during office hours. We’re very sad. Very Sad.
We hope to be back fully online ASAP but were at the mercy of cross pacific communication lines. We’re not the only ones suffering by the looks of things!

JAC the Anhui province based auto maker is teaming up with China Oriental Asset Management company to start providing auto loans to potential buyers. Getting an auto loan in China is tough - you have to pay a hefty down payment and that doesnt always guarentee you a loan from one of the big banks - now that a company is out there specializing in auto loans they will no doubt be a big success in China. JAC and China Oriental have put together a 500 million RMB investment plan according to a document filed with the Shanghai Stock Exchange. JAC will invest 100 million RMB and its parent company, Jianghuai would invest 150 million RMB for a 30% share.
Perhaps I can get a loan to buy a JAC Vision 2 now - pictured left

It seems Chery has been given a fat line of credit, thanks to the China Development Bank (CDB). The CDB has given Chery 740 million dollars to help Chery double its research capacity from 2006 to 2011. It seems like a drop in the ocean for what most big names spend in research, but that 740 million dollars will no doubt go along way in China.
Heres the story from Xinhua:
The China Development Bank (CDB), China’s policy bank, has granted a line of credit totaling 5.8 billion yuan (740 million U.S. dollars) to Chinese carmaker Chery for research and development of new auto models during the 2006-2010 period.
The CDB and the Chery Automobile Co. Ltd., based in east China’s Anhui Province, signed an agreement on the line of credit at the Anhui provincial capital Hefei on Monday.
With the loan, Chery is expected to improve its capabilities in independent research and development of new models and expand its production capacity.
To date, the CDB has loaned Chery 11.2 billion yuan to support the carmaker’s development of vehicle marques.
Chery sold 300,000 cars this year, giving it the fourth highest sales in China.
