Nanjing MG 7 Spy Pics
Published by January 30th, 2007 in Nanjing Automobile Corporation and Chinese Car News. 4 CommentsThis picture was first posted by the user Windy at the MG Rover Forums but we feel it deserves a proper airing on China Car Times. The picture shows a new MG 7 with no plates, entering the Xuan Wu Hu tunnel that goes under Xuan Wu Lake in Nanjing. Only a rear picture at the moment. Nanjing seems to like releasing news a bit at a time. Click the below picture to see a bigger picture, leave a comment and tell us what you think!
Roewe China Pricing Officially Anounced
Published by January 30th, 2007 in Roewe - Rong Wei and Chinese Car News. 3 CommentsAccording to yesterdays slightly ignored press release from SAIC’s Roewe brand, which points itself out as being ‘The first British/Chinese car in China‘ Roewe claims its pricing for the Classic 2.5L Roewe will be 230,180.00RMB, the 2.5L Aristocracy Edition will be 240,380.00RMB The 2.5L luxury edition will be 270,680.00RMB. No word on the hybrid price yet, although it could be somewhere between the classic model and the aristocracy model. Pretty pricey for the Chinese market, but still a lot cheaper than Roewes rivals in this market segment, the Roewe is almost a quarter of the cost of a 5 series BMW.

Dongfeng, the Chinese partner of Citroen in China have created a new look Citroen Xsara for the China, Hong Kong and Taiwan regions. Basically the new Xsara has an updated grill to keep it in line with the rest of Citroen range that sport the same grill, nothing too exciting. Citroen also added bluetooth capability to the car as well as offering leather seats on the more expensive versions.

Longbridge UK - The cars start rolling again.
Published by January 30th, 2007 in Nanjing Automobile Corporation and Chinese Car News. 0 Comments
It has been exactly 622 days since production ceased at the Longbridge, UK plant but today, things are getting rolling again. Today, the whole automotive world was looking to China expecting to see the launch of the new MG vehicles, instead the action was back where MG began, in England. Although production at Longbrige will probably never return to the levels of Rovers heyday in the 20th century, Longbridge will continue to produce MG vehicles. Longbridge UK is now producing the MG TF sports car (pictured left) which has an updated look for the UK markets, the older version of the MGTF will go on sale in China, but the newer version will be available in China in 2008. Longbridge will also expand its workforce from the preseant skeleton staff of 110 employees to 250, Longbridge will produce an initial run of 3,000 vehicles in the first year of production which will rise to 8,000 in the second year and then 12,000 in the third.
We at China Car Times are looking forward to getting our hands on a cheap Chinese made MGTF, we hope they are a bit cheaper than the prices that we posted before!

Nanjing MG: Media Round UP
Published by January 30th, 2007 in Nanjing Automobile Corporation and Chinese Car News. 0 CommentsRather than translate all of the speech from the Nanjing MG conference word for word (its a good 3000 words, with very few periods/full stops - that speaker must have had Olympic class lungs) we thought we would summarize the opening speech for you. There were further speeches by various Nanjing MG top dogs.
Nanjing MG Conference
- Introducing MG - Where is MG from, and what does it represent. Oddly MG was introduced as a charming, elegant man that embodies 100 years of British auto culture and engineering skill. The host then asks the audience to feel the speed, glory, dreams, and passion that the MG brand brings with it
- Nanjing MG declares itself to be the first fully international Chinese auto brand.
- Nanjing MG talks about its acquisition of MG Rover, and how other Chinese auto brands should follow Nanjing MG’s lead in innovation, and fostering home grown talent to further the Chinese auto industry.
- Host talks about brave English knights in the days of old, the perfect gentleman and scholar. The host then compares a stereotypical character of a knight to the MG brand. The host talks more about MG’s history, how MG holds 40 of the previous land speed records (editors note: Is this true?) The host compares Nanjing MG to a beautiful diamond that has come to China.
- The host introduces the new tagline/slogan for MG ‘Let your heart beat faster’ ‘让心跳加速 rang xin tiao jia su‘
- The host tells how Nanjing MG is reinterpreting classic designs.
- The host declares that MG is reborn, and is a top class brand, with top class technology and top class workers.
- The host hopes that the MG medal will become the pride of the Chinese people.
- The host hopes that the whole words automobile industry will applaud Nanjing MG for its efforts.
- The host thanks everybody for attending.
The Chinese website, Sohu.com has a nice section on Nanjing MG, but as of yet they don’t have any pictures either. Some of the comments left on the Chinese news story over at Sohu.com are interesting:
- This piece of rice already has blight.
- To rely on Nanjing MG, Ive already lost hope.
- Originally it [Rover] was an international brand.
- The decline of the British Empire, the decline in the name of MG, if we don’t inject new ideas into MG, Nanjing MG will be short lived.
- Nanjing are international car profiteers, they don’t have the technology.
What we find strange about the whole affair is the lack of cars, and the lack of coverage by the Chinese media. There are only a few articles about the even that we could find via the Chinese search engine Baidu.com.
Update: This is probably old news to some, but Nanjing MG are planning four platforms, similar to the BMW series of cars. There will be an MG 7 series, a 5 series and a 3 series range of cars, of course the MG-TF coupe will be in the line up as well.
Nanjing MG: ‘Let your heart beat faster’
Published by January 29th, 2007 in Nanjing Automobile Corporation and Chinese Car News. 0 CommentsAfter a restless nights sleep waiting for Nanjing MG to announce their new range of MG cars, I was somewhat disappointed by their news conference this morning. It was something along the lines of ‘Yes, we have new cars, but we don’t have anything to show you, but hey, we’ve got some catchy slogans!‘
Anyway, we’re busy working on translations of the speech, and news articles about Nanjing MG’s conference this morning. Bare with us! In the meantime, it seems Nanjing MG have a new MG website, yet again a lot of stuff about nothing but there is some small pictures of whats coming, dont blink or you will miss them www.nacmg.com Looks like a new MG TF and the MG 7 series.

What can we expect? Well, theres lots of rumors floating around, and perhaps some concrete news, such as:

Shanghai Daily.com - Chinese cars arent so safe
Published by January 29th, 2007 in Geely Automobile and Chinese Car News. 0 CommentsChina is catching up, and catching up fast. Since the Chinese NCAP tests were started to test out the safety of vehicles that are going onto the market in China foreign brands have done much better, and Chinese brands haven’t faired so well, actually they’ve done pretty badly. Especially Geely and their ‘Freedom Vessel’
The Free Cruiser sedan developed by Geely Holdings Group, which is expected to be among the first batch of models to be sold in the United States market, got only two stars - the lowest rating - in the China New Car Assessment Program, the China Automotive Technology and Research Center said this week.
The official vehicle inspection laboratory gave three stars to the A5 sedan made by Chery Automobile Co ltd and F3 sedan by BYD Automobile Co Ltd. At the other end of the scale, Toyota’s Crown premier sedan earned a top five-star rating, and the institute gave four stars to Honda’s City and Volkswagen’s Sagitar.
The tests were the first for Chinese-made models under the N-CAP program, an independent crash test drafted by Euro-NCAP, which sets standards in Europe.

A website named Zhejiang Online, a portal type site for Zhejiang province in China has just released a list of what they believe are the best selling ’superminis’ in China. Funniest thing of all, not one is a domestic brand. Check the list out for yourself:
- VW Polo
- Hyundai Accent
- Kia Rio
- Peugeot 206
- Chevrolet Aveo
- Honda Fit
- Honda City
- Suzuki Swift
- Citroen C2
- Buick Sale
So there you have it, the most popular entry level/supermini cars according to Zhejiang online in China are foreign brands, well except for those above that are produced with a Chinese partner.
