Chery gets the Dodge - Official

We’ve seen more ‘Official’ posts than we care to remember - we thought the Dodge Hornet + Chery deal was done and dusted, with a bit of a worry about Chery’s quality levels by Dodge but it seems Chery laid Dodges worries to rest. Chery will be producing Dodges small super mini vehicles to keep costs down.

Frankfurt, Germany - DaimlerChrysler AG, seeking to cut costs and boost sales in North America, said Tuesday it will start selling Chinese-made cars there and in western Europe as it tries to meet demand for smaller, more economical vehicles.

The world’s fifth-largest automaker said its supervisory board approved the framework of a limited partnership that will see China’s Chery Motor Co. build the cars in China.

They will be sold in North America and western Europe under the aegis of its Chrysler Group brands, which include Dodge and Jeep. Financial details were not released.

“Small vehicles such as these will allow Chrysler Group brands to compete in segments in which the brands do not currently compete, and which are especially important in price- and fuel-economy sensitive markets,” the German-US automaker said in a statement after a meeting of its supervisory board.

Lets all play the guessing game - FAW denies its after Chrysler

Yesterday we reported that FAW were after Chrysler, it seems today that FAW arent after Chrysler according (again) to the China Daily:

First Automotive Works Corp (FAW), China’s No 2 auto group by 2006 sales, yesterday denied a report that it would buy Chrysler Group, the floundering US arm of DaimlerChrysler.

The Oriental Morning Post in Shanghai yesterday said State-owned FAW and DaimlerChrysler are in talks to acquire Chrysler, quoting an unnamed source.

However, Gao Yuan, director of FAW’s news center, said it had no plans to buy Chrysler.

“We don’t have the huge amount of money needed to buy Chrysler,” Gao told China Daily.

But according to Forbes, it seems Chery, FAW and SAIC are all chasing a piece of the action.

BEIJING (XFN-ASIA) - Three China-based automakers have separately begun talks with DaimlerChrysler AG about potentially buying its Detroit-based Chrysler unit in order to speed up their global expansion, the South China Morning Post reported, citing unnamed sources.

Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp (SAIC (nyse: SAI - news - people )), Jilin-based FAW Group Corp and Anhui-based Chery Automobile have joined carmakers from around the world in early talks with the German company about acquiring all or part of the third-largest US automaker, the Hong Kong newspaper reported.

Chinese Car News In Brief

It would be a big fat waste for us to post these bits of news into individual news so here the all are together:

Geely gets a new driver - Geely, the manufacturer of King Kong cars got a new boss in its Shanghai Maple Leaf subsidiary (they make a rather nice car actually)today, Mr. Liu Jin Liang. The previous captain of the ship, Mr. Xu Gang, will remain on as chairman.

Chery retools a factory - Chery spent a load of dosh tooling up a factory that it bought from FAW Yangzi, the factory has a maximum output of 80,000 vehicles at current capacity. Chery plan to make a 7-seater light vehicle (we can guess the Chery V5?) and also according to news reports a 13 seat wagon - We dont know anything about a Chery wagon! Apparently they are also working on a new van that will cost between 20,000 and 30,000rmb. I think we will have to wait until next year to see some of these models, unless of course friends of China Car Times can divulge some photos with us….

Beijing Benz rolling in cash - China became Mercedes biggest buyer of its cars, managing to sell 2700 units last month alone and offsetting Japan as the previous big spenders on Mercs.

Changfeng to make the Mitsubishi Eclipse?

Changfeng make the Shogun/Pajero SUV’s in China, could they be making the eclipse as well? Changfeng has always been seen as a bit of a fuddy-duddy car maker with no flair of the other manufacturers such as Chery or Great wall who have bouncy, round car designs - Changfeng is the manufacturer for the Peoples Liberation Army SUV, those rebadged Mitsubishi Shoguns look really stiff and boring (but damned cheap they are!). To be fair, Chanfengs new and upcoming models look like they will rectify that image - the concepts shown at Beijing Auto Show in 2006 and again in Detroit Auto Show 07 really talked up a storm.

Chinese car site, acspy.com, managed to get a bit of a blurry picture of an Eclipse parked up against in a Changfeng short wheel base SUV in a parking lot. We hope Chengfeng really do make this here in China. The choice of cheap Chinese coupes is really, really thin. Although with the likes of Nanjing bringing out the MGTF and Changfeng with the Eclipse it should get pretty wide, pretty quickly!

FAW want Chrsyler?

According to the Chinese governments English mouthpiece, the China Daily, it seems that FAW (First Automotive Works) are attempting to get their fingers into the Chrysler pie. FAW already have lots of joint venture agreements with various top brand car manufacturers - they have deep pockets as they didnt go running after MG Rover like Nanjing Auto and SAIC did so perhaps they might just pull off the Chrysler deal and create a Chinese manufacturing base. What would happen to the Chery-Dodge deal if FAW were to buy a controlling stake in Chrysler?

Chinese automaker FAW Group Corp refused comment Tuesday on a report it is considering bidding for a stake in DaimlerChrysler AG’s ailing Chrysler Group.

Meanwhile, a US newspaper reported that Chrysler was seeking permission from its parent company to begin building small cars with China’s Chery Automobile Co for export to overseas markets.

The Shanghai-based Oriental Morning Post said FAW had sent representatives to the United States to negotiate a deal for a unspecified stake in Chrysler, citing an unnamed person familiar with the situation.

Staff at the FAW Group headquarters’ publicity office refused comment on the report. DaimlerChrysler’s public relations department in Beijing also would not comment.

FAW, based in the northeastern city of Changchun, is one of China’s biggest automobile makers and a local partner of Toyota Motor Corp and Volkswagen AG.

Speculation about possible deals for Chrysler surfaced after DaimlerChrysler Chairman Dieter Zetsche said February 14 that all options are on the table for the money-losing US business and he would not rule out a possible sale.

Big name automakers have set their sights on China and other fast-growing developing markets to help offset legacy costs and provide sales growth missing in the US and other Western markets. So far, domestic and foreign manufacturers have focused mainly on meeting soaring demand inside China.

But at the same time, Chinese automakers have begun looking overseas for acquisitions, both to expand their market reach and to tap advanced technology and design capacity. Chinese rival Nanjing Automobile Group bought the bulk of Britain’s MG Rover Group’s assets last year.

State-owned SAIC Motor Corp, Shanghai partner of Volkswagen AG and General Motors Corp, holds a 51 percent stake in South Korea’s Ssangyong Motor Co.

The Detroit News reported Tuesday that Chrysler was moving ahead with its alliance with Chery, formed last year, to build small cars in China.

It said DaimlerChrysler’s supervisory board would review such a proposal in meetings this week. It said the German automaker was also in talks to expand its cooperation with Chery to include auto parts and other car models.

DaimlerChysler’s spokesman in Beijing could not be immediately reached for comment on the Detroit News report.

The company recently announced it was preparing a dealership network to launch the Dodge brand in China this year.

An Updated Santana For 2007

vw_santana.jpg

The VW Santana, thats the VW Dasher to our North American friends, has long been a staple vehicle (and seems like it will be for a few years more) of Chinas taxi drivers, police vehicles, and shifty looking fellows in general government workers. Shanghai VW has surely made a killing over the past few years on this model alone!

Chinese car website, Autohome.com.cn is reporting that Shanghai VW are updating the trusty workhorse Santana for 2007 with an electric gas cap, alloy wheels, electrically controlled wing mirrors, CD/MP3 playing radio and several other items which were originally only optional extras but are now being offered as standard. The base price is a bargain 70,980RMB or $9,160USD.

I wonder how many of these Shanghai VW are selling every year now better, newer models are being sold like the Passat?

Get yourself a Jeep 2500 for only 100,000RMB

bj2500.jpg

Bei Qi Autos, a company that has long been in a joint venture agreement with the iconical American SUV maker Jeep. Beijing Autoworks and the then AMC hooked up in 1984, production continued even after Chrsyler bought out AMC. For over 20 years the design of the Jeep Cherokee has not changed much, except for slight alterations to the front grill and headlights. The Cherokee is still made in Beijing, except it is named the 2500. Bei Qi makes its own version of the Jeep, as with many joint venture automobile companies in China, the domestic partner gets to produce an ‘offshoot’ carbon copy of the original vehicle - Think of the Xia Li/Toyota joint venture. Xia Li sells the Toyota superminis under the Xia Li brand alongside the Toyota variants. The above Bei Qi ‘Qi Shi‘ - literally meaning the ‘Cavalry‘ is expected to be on the market between March and April and the starting price will be just 100,000RMB or $12,906USD.

UPDATE: We’re looking for a distributer in the USA that can purchase the front ends of this Jeep 2500 from us and distribute them within North America to Jeep XJ fans. If you’re interested, and you’ve got the logistical know how to pull it off USA side, we’ll get working on the China side. Interested? Contact us here today!

We’re having Email Problems

Apologies to anyone who has emailed as of late and hasn’t received a reply. Apparently there is something wrong with our DNS (what ever that is) so we haven’t received any email for a few days - We just thought you guys were being kind as it was a national holiday in China. Evidently not! We usually receive 20 - 30 emails a day but it was quite over the past 2 days, which made us think that something was wrong. We’ve been told the DNS entries for China Car Times is stuffed, not sure what it is - but we’ll get it fixed!

Chery A5 wins some kind of award

The other night on China Central Television (thats CCTV!) there was a Auto Awards show - think something like Car Of The Year or similar format, my wife watched it, I was busy with a new toy.
Anyway, The Chery A5 won a consumer award for the best value car for quality and pricing. Chery must be doing something good!
