This picture and article seem to have been gathering momentum over the past few days, so we thought we’d post it up here too. There seems to be a lot of skepticism of the photo, and then there are some people who believe its as real as the Shroud of Turin. We’ll let you make your own minds

Obviously those guys in mg forum are not aware of the reality in Chinese market. They may think SAIC is vulnerable after NAC got their great britain MG. The fact is SAIC have sold over 1 million cars in Chinese makert 2006 with its foreign partners, while NAC-FIAT only sold 30 thousand and is struggling to end its 3year consecutive losses. Rover75 is good although a bit old, SAIC may sell Roewe750 well for its reputation and excellent maketing like what happened in GM cars recent years, but there is no room for outdated Rover25/45/MGTF.
nono,
I would be in agreement with you. Fiat are about ready to jump the Nanjing ship and go into partnership with Chery.
Roewes advertising campaign since November has been amazing. From nothing they have created a brand that is well known in Chinese cities.
Also they could do well internationally as they don’t have to fully burden that Rover stigma about their necks like Nanjing MG will have to.
Although Nono, you say there is no space for the outdated 45/MGTF. I think that any small sized family car like the 45 would be good competition for the focus and the MGTF would be a great sportscar in China.
Elsewhere, they would not take as well as they once did.
Bob,
Maybe you’re right, but the competition will surely be fierce. Both Rover25/45 and MGTF are platforms over 10 years, that’s what Chinese consumers most hate - fooled by an outdated facelift car^_^ Every buyer will easily make decision when compare NAC-rover45 with latest Civic, to be honest, it will be embarrassing for NAC.
Consumers don’t have to choose between Roewe and MG, they could get latest cars from VW/GM/Toyota/Honda or Chery/Geely/BYD with a lower price. Even FAW is pushing their own brand, that’s an equal competitor as SAIC.
I agree with you MG brand itself will be burden for NAC although it will contribute some sells abroad in short term.
Nono, If MG does not innovate and create something amazing in their next model line up, then they are surely done for in the international market, unless they go the way of other Chinese brands and focus their ‘modern’ luxury cars on the developing markets.
