Geely finally hires a proper designer, remakes the Beauty Leopard

16 April 2007 15 Comments

Perhaps the competition from other domestically made coupes like the future Chery Fulwin/Shooting Sport and the now Nanjing owned MGTF" href="http://www.chinacartimes.com/2007/02/15/roewe-is-in-a-state-nanjing-mgtf-about-to-go-on-the-market-part-one/">MGTF have forced Geely into getting a proper design team together to revamp their Beauty Leopard coupe. The original Beauty Leopard was ugly, that car looked like it had been dragged kicking and screaming from the early 80s, the second revised version wasnt that much better looking either. What do China Car Times readers think of this latest incarnation of the Beauty Leopard (below)

You think so? Personally think its a VAST improvement!

I couldnt find any side shots, but I believe it to look much like the Hyundai coupe.

But then again, I think the Hyundai coupe was the look they were going for originally before they balls it up.

Looks like they hired a furniture designer…. I once had a wooden credenza that looked a bit like that facia…

Thanks hdom – I’ve added them!

I think this car is getting a bit of a hard time from everyone, when you see the new versions against the old versions you can really see the difference.

The old one came with ‘twin’ exhausts, however one was fake….

Also – the rear brakes were drums but Geely had covered them with a plastic ‘disc brake’ to make it look more ’sporty’

This is a true work of art compared to the previous generations!

Hdom – this car is getting a right hard time from the non Chinese. Cries of ‘Its a copy of XXX! are to be heard on every site.

I wonder if the Chinese could make a completely new design without somebody saying ‘Its XXX car!’

Although, I am guilty of doing just that too :D

I don’t recall the previous versions of this model, but any way I think is a big improvement for all the car industry in China. Seem to be like there is a BIG ISSUE with designers in China. Forgive me if I’m to rude but I think here IN CHINA THERE IS NO DESIGN AT ALL. All the cars seem to be some kind of hybrid collage of western brands.

Any way we should give some credit to Geely for trying a little harder that other companies.

It’s a real pity that China car companies have this big problem with design. Not too many countries have the technology and the resources to have as many car brands as China and all this effort go to the trash can when this companies can’t put a little effort in the design

I would never buy a Chinese brand, car just because they all look sooooo ugly, cheap and most important they all look like they copy something from somebody.

If chinese brand don’t work harder in the design of their cars they will never have a real place in the world market. Look at the neighbors Korea and Japan.
