Step back, analyze the situation. Roewe showed off their 750 model months before Nanjing MG even started producing their Rover 75 based models. From November 2006, when the Roewe 750 was unveiled, until March 27th when the Nanjing MG7 was unveiled, Roewe had taken out HUGE advertising campaigns, the 750 range of cars was seen everywhere - airports, road side bill boards and not forgetting the traditional media outlets (newspaper, magazines etc) can Nanjing MG pull one back and play catch up with Roewe? Do they have the funds to carry out such a large media campaign?
One problem that China Car Times can see, is that both Roewe 750 and Nanjing MG7 are based off the same car, the Rover 75. They look similar from the front (grills apart, mind) they look identical from the side and have similarities in the rear. One Chinese auto website is running with the headline ‘Dont look wrong - its not the Roewei 750 Its the Nanjing MG7!‘ With the number of Roewe 750’s China Car Times has seen on the roads lately, we cant help but see Nanjing MG as the helpless underdogs.
Watching the SAIC V’s Nanjing MG battle unfold over the next few months will be a fun one to watch. China Car Times will keep you updated.

The MG name has a more prestigious rendering throughout the world even though it got a little tarnished in the UK! Roewe or “Rong Wei” doesn’t have that ‘ring’ to it! On looking closely at both the 750 and the 7 there are many similarities as they are both based on the same base but there are different problems for both. The 750 retains much of the original 75 architecture with a revised front bumper moulding which works but the rear end modifications look like a poor copy of a Volvo or a ‘wannabe’ 7 Series Beemer which its not. The dash is an improvement to the inside, however the dash displayed on another SAIC stand was even better! The MG retains much of the old ZT except the rear lights which may be a minus to some peoples eyes.Offering three different versions of the 7 also confuses with the Mark One, Mark Two Face lift and a 75 Limo with the ‘premium’ grille will no doubt confuse the Brits no end!Also for me the 7L with all the wood seems out of place in what is a sporting model and not the luxury one the 750 portrays.The situation with Roewe and MG reminds me of when Rolls Royce and Bentley were ’split up’ and for a while both models vied for attention in the same market before revealing different designs in opposing directions. Perhaps the coupe could be introduced as an MG rather than a Roewe and also they maybe should join forces ala MG Rover and become MG Roewe!

While the 750 and 7 are very similar (even more so to Chinese consumers who are less familiar with the originals) MG does have the TF, the recently unveiled 5 and possibly a 3 as rumored. With Roewe’s beautiful 450, there will be more distinction between the two model lines when they are all up and running, attracting different buyers. Outside of China, I think Roewe will be the one needing to catch up to MG.

NAC-MG please produce the beautiful MG 7 Coupe (Rover 75 coupe) It will be a very good seller and a halo car for the MG brand.
