Geely Going For Gold!

We mentioned a while back on China Car Times that Geely was going up market, tired of making low end crap that folks in developing countries buy and then complain about - what do you expect to get when you buy a 3/4 cylinder car for $6,000USD? Geely isnt quite throwing in the towel with the low cost budget cars yet though, but it does have its eyes set on high on a new range of high class, luxury vehicles. They look like BMWs with bad nose jobs.

Almost any design that comes out today will have some relevancy to existing models so I will not be the one to throw stones at Geely for their effort here. However I will say this; A design does not make for a quality automobile. I recently rented a Hyundai Azera Limited. This is their top of the line car with their highest trim level. Hyundai is a company who has their sights set on luxury rides with the Hyundai Genesis in the starting blocks. The car in question had 7,000 miles and already the interior was falling apart. A front seat storage bin door was inoperative and the back window shade was half-way up on the right side and down all the way on the left. So much for luxury. A note to Chinese menufacturers* If you plan on entering into the luxury market arena, make sure your quality, reliability and durability are without question. Otherwise the losses will be deep and the pain insufferable

To me, the white sketches look like a Lexus IS with a strange nose job.

well contact Geely and maybe if you have enough money they will build the car the way you want it to look.

Are Chinese automakers so incompetent in the design department that they have to blatantly copy Western market designs? They did not even bother to change the mirrors and side profile of the Lexus IS in the first design, then further on, they have BMW wheels and rear end on an IS. How do they justify this? Do they think no one will notice?
This is not a criticism leveled at Geely alone, just look at the Big Diesel God (Chevy Truck), Little Aristocrat (Smart), The Great Wall “Scion’s,” and BYD’s BMW and MB phonies just to name a few. It is one thing to mimic your competitors (i.e. the Lexus LS MB S-Class clone in the late 80’s) but when you can interchange body panels, then that is flat out theft. China does not need to resort to that, they can do so much better on their own. They need to bring their own design language to the market to expand on choice, not just provide cheap knock-off’s.

They looked like photoshopped versions of design sketches from Toyota, Lexus and BMW.

This is just sad.

A bad fusion between BMW-Mercedes-Lexus-Audi-Mitsubishi.

Its strange. China has a great ancient culture, with that, why only copy the other designs for “own” cars???’

All I can say is, at least they’ve chosen to copy cars that aren’t pig ugly.

I’m one of those in developing countries who bought “low end crab” Geely cars.. and I thank you so much for your ENCOURAGING words which written by Chinese people about their Chinese cars. What else can be said? You have destroyed our trust in our way of thinking and our choice. Unfortunately, we have to cope with our “$6,000″ cars till they, the cars, prove to be better than what you think; or they, Geely car makers, regain us our lost trust by your words.

Thank You
Bahaaeldin

The white/silver one is a blatant copy of the Lexus and the Blueish ones are blatant copies of BMW’s so I guess I these are great designs. Too bad China didn’t come up with them.

wow you must be a private car investigator, or are you the car Houdini. maybe just maybe and this is a far fetch “they may share the same frame” something like Porsche and Audi did for there suv. again Lexus is owned by Toyota and Toyota sells blue prints to Geely so maybe just maybe toyota will sell there design to Geely as they did there motors.

Guys, I have seen exact production copy cats in China, there’s a clone of the BMW X5, Mini-size of the 2nd generation Lexus GS, Nissian Altmia, 4-Runner, these ugly designs will more than likely go into production.

China can’t design, it’s not because they don’t have any education or tech skills, they do. They are making Cadis, Audis, VW, and Bimmers in China right now, hell they even produce Renault cars. It’s the taste level. China has been developing for barely past 15 years. Everything you see in China were probably build up in the last 10 years. Their level of taste isn’t quiet there here. It took South Korea almost 25 years to catch up or in some areas surpass some Japaneses designs. One problem with mainland Chinese designs is that they don’t know how to keep it simple and understated. They make everything so busy and crazy, that’s from their cultural background, even though not as bad as Russians or Persians. However if you look at the designs from Singapore or Taiwan, you will see many beautiful designs, that’s because they are developed, and they understand the beauty of simplicity and elegance. In conclusion, Italians are still the best from cloths to cars……then Danish…….oh yeah, those over priced Bang & Olufsen pieces……..=-)

i disagree the Italians cars are hell in the shop, i had a f355 and it was 6000.00 just for a cluch engine out service, o and if china cant design why is all there money tied up in us bonds and everything we buy is from china, they may not have the education or tech skills but they had the money to buy the blue prints from Toyota for there cars. lets see you open up a car company or are you jealous that china is doing so well.

David, I’m not understand what well you want to say… Is true that you had a Ferrari 355 who has generated motor problems to 6000 km? But u’think seriously that someone is disposed to believe one you pathetic lies? If you like the Chinese cars or Korean cars or Americans… and depreciations a the Italians and the Germans and the Swedes cars, is simply a your cultural problem of which you would have to worry, if not you succeed to understand “why…”… regards.

This is just sad. If the Chinese car industry keeps copying the bulk of other’s designs they will just perpetuate their stigma of producing derivative, low quality, cheap cars.

I think that Geely is just a newly-built small carmaker. Its ability of design is very poor, but I’m sure,in a few years we will see a lot of wonderful disigns from Geely just like BMW’s and Benz’s. I believe of Chinese disigners’ talent.

i am going to buy one as a kick around car, i hope the price is good. the motor in the Geely cars is made by Toyota. Geely bought all there blue prints, so all we are buying is a Toyota for a good price with a different body.
