Suzuki to make a Splash next year

splash.jpg

The Suzuki Splash, based off of the well used Suzuki Swift platform, (which is also shared with the SX4) is set to be produced in China in the first half of 2007. The best selling Suzuki Swift is arguably one of the best cars Suzuki have ever made, ever, and the fact that Suzuki have stuck the new Splash shell onto the Swift platform only goes to show how much confidence Suzuki have in that particular chassis. Tha Suzuki Splash does remind us of the Changhe Ideal, given that Changhe and Suzuki do have a JV agreement, we’re wondering if it was a truly independent design or if it was a joint design?

VW Neeza to go into production next year!

vw_neeza_081.jpg

China Car Times learned today that VW China are planning to put the VW Neeza wagon-cum-SUV into production early next year. The super sexy Neeza was designed in China, for China. VW are obviously staking a lot in the Chinese market, usually China gets the old designs that the rest of the world doesnt want any more, but in recent years we’ve been seeing that trend reverse, even to the point where Chinese designed and made cars are looking better than their Euro or Yank counterparts, yes, we’re thinking of the Buick Lacrosse, we hate to say it, but the American version is nothing on the Chinese one. There are several cars in China that have both an ‘American edition’ and an ‘Oriental Edition’ usually the Oriental edition is much nicer, but we will talk about these in another article.

The Neeza may look like the Audi Q7, but it is actually quite a bit smaller in design, almost 23 inches shorter so it puts more along the lines of the up and coming Audi Q5. The coolest feature is clearly the suicide doors. Engine wise, we’re unsure, but got this quote from Edmunds.com

Several engines are under discussion for the new car, from the 170-horsepower 1.4-liter inline four-cylinder Twincharger used in the Golf GT all the way up to the 300-hp 3.6-liter V6 of the new Passat R36.

1.4 and putting out 170BHP. Sign us up, we’ll have one!

Chery A6CC coupe spy shots

Chery fans, its time to get some excitement in your life as the widely praised A6CC looks like its going to be put into production very soon, it seems the boys from Wuhu have knocked out a running prototype, and lo and behold, it has brakes! Real Brakes! When the car reaches the market, its intended to be around 180,000rmb which puts it nicely against the three way Chinese coupe competition that seems to be hotting up in 07 and 08. We wonder if the interior is as nice as the last time the prototype was aired?

Stretched 300C turns up in the motherland

The Chrysler 300c is arguably one of the best looking American made cars on the road today, actually, we could argue that its not American but made in China, at least for the Chinese market via the Beijing Benz tie up. Whatever, the 300c is cool. Despite the high 300c price in China, the base model is nearly double the American model, we would love to have one, even better would be our own chauffer driven 300c, just like this long one:

China Car Times is currently unclear on why someone would spend a huge wad of cash on stretching a 300c, perhaps it has been bought by an enterprising fellow who wishes to rent it out for weekend wedding use.

Dongfeng to invest in a new production center

Dongfeng is a major player in the Chinese auto world, they have joint venture agreements with Nissan, Citroen, Peugeot, Kia, and last but not least Honda, as well as making their own range of MPV’s, light trucks, and heavy trucks. When it comes down to it, Dongfeng is one of the ’silent players’ that dont always steal the limelight, like some other Chinese car makers (we’re thinking of you, SAIC!)

DONGFENG Motor Corp will invest 7.6 billion yuan (US$1 billion) in a production center for own-brand passenger cars in Wuhan in central Hubei Province, the Shanghai Securities News said, citing unidentified sources.

The production center, due to begin operations in 2008, will have an initial capacity of 120,000 cars a year, which will eventually rise to 330,000, the Chinese-language newspaper said, without providing a timeframe. The company will also make engines, the report added.

Newsflash: SAIC to merge with MG one way or another.

China Car Times readers have long been saying there will be a merger between SAIC and Nanjing MG, we didnt really think anything would happen between the two Chinese auto giants, after all, they only have 2 cars that share the same DNA and it looks like SAIC is making fresh metal Roewe anyway, however, higher ups in the Chinese central government believe that two seperate companies making pretty much the same car (Rover 75 based cars) looks a bit foolish, and have been pushing the two parties to work together.

To buy the remains of bankrupt British car maker, MG-Rover in 2005 NAC looked internally to raise the cash needed (67 million pounds!), each of its subsidiary companies ponied up a few million to stick into the pot to buy MG-Rover. NAC were successful with their bid, and undercut SAIC a lot, even managing to get more from MG-Rover than SAIC did, for less. One of the NAC subsidiary companies that stuck dollars into the pot for the MG Rover purchase, Yuejin (a maker of light trucks and a small car) has signed a letter of intent with SAIC to explore the possibility of working together on the Nanjing MG auto project.

Also, Paul Stowe, the Director of Quality Control at Nanjing MG, recently wrote an article on his blog comparing the MG7 to the Roewe 750, (if you’re in China, use this link) in the conclusion of his blog he that hinted as a merger between Nanjing MG and SAIC is looming, perhaps the Roewe will be re-branded as Austin cars, an older British marque that hasnt seen the light of day since 1989. Austin can be credited with creating the internationally famed mini (the original one, not the BMW inspired MINI) and the Austin Maestro and Austin Van which are still made to this day in China. Are we going to see an Austin W2 any time soon? Mr. Stowe certainly got our minds working overtime!

Arise MG ZR, you are to be born again!

mgzr.jpg

Fast on the heels of yesterdays MG7 news piece we bring you news of the new MG 3 ZR. The original MGZR, based off the Rover 25 but with sports styling (and some magic done under the hood) proved popular in the UK and Europe with younger buyers and chavs In 2004 The MGZR was MG-Rovers best selling car. In China, China Car Times could easily see this 1.8 mini monster compete with the Ford Focus sports. No word on pricing yet, but we’re pretty excited to see this car back on the road again! We havnt heard any particular date when the MG3 ZR will be going on the market, or if it is only aimed at the Chinese market rather than Euro markets, however, once we hear of any information China Car Times readers can rest assure we will be updating you.

Although the MG7 seems to have had an interior face lift for 2007/2008, it seems the MGZR has stayed the same, perhaps an eagle eyed ZR owner could point if there are any differences. As usual, click the images to see bigger versions.

Beijing Hyundai missed sales target for second year running!

Oh dear, the Korean auto giant that came from no where in China to making quite a large brand but seems to have tapered off in recent years with regards to sales, that seems to stem from what appears to be a rather really dull product line up in China. Hopefully the Getz will turn them around.

HYUNDAI Motor Corp may miss its sales target in China for a second straight year due to a lack of new models and the popularity of Chinese-made, price-competitive models.

Beijing Hyundai Motor Corp, a joint venture between South Korea’s biggest auto maker and Beijing Automotive Industry Holding, saw first half-year sales drop 23 percent to 91,864 vehicles year on year, the Union of National Passenger Car Market Information said yesterday. The sales account for 30 percent of its whole-year target of 310,000 and caused the group to drop from fifth to ninth on the list of top 10 best-sellers in the same period.

It sold 290,000 vehicles last year, an increase of 24 percent from 2005, but outside its target of 300,000 units.

Zhang Xin, an auto analyst from Guotai Jun’an Securities Co Ltd, said a lack of new models and competitive local cars, like Chery and Geely, are not helping the Hyundai cause.

Sun Zhenjie, a spokesman of Beijing Hyundai, attributed the dilemma to a limited production capacity that prevents it from adding models.

“We are undergoing a restructuring in both our product line-ups and costs this year,” said Sun. “But so far there is no plan to change our sales target.”

Beijing Hyundai sold Sonata, Elantra and Accent cars in China with an annual capacity of 300,000 units.

The car maker is constructing a second plant in China able to make 300,000 units annually. It also plans to locally produce the coupe sports car and a revamped Elantra in the plant, expected to start operation in the first quarter of next year.

Last month, Beijing Hyundai also lowered the price by up to 10,000 yuan (US$1,321) on the complete product mix.

“The price cut is not a wise move for Beijing Hyundai because it will also eat into its profits when its Chinese parent Beijing Auto is preparing for a public listing,” said Zhang.

Chang’an Mazda 2 spotted out and about

The Mazda2, otherwise known as the Mazda Demio in other markets, has finally been put into production by Chang’an FordMazda by the looks of things. The funky little motor is going to replace the Ford Fiesta saloon which didnt do to well in the Chinese market. Chinese consumers are expected to get the ultra cool mini car later this year, it will come with either a 1.3 or 1.5 liter engine and will cost from 80,000rmb and upwards, its main competitors will be the Honda Fit/Jazz, and the Nissan Livina.

SUV sales going up, and up and up

Chery and Great Wall must be happy, long live the SUV!

HALF-YEAR sales for sport utilities vehicles in China rose 39 percent from a year earlier, outpacing the growth for the whole industry.

And models with smaller engines led the field amid high gasoline prices.

Chinese auto makers sold 158,000 SUVs for the first six months, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers yesterday. The total vehicle market rose 23 percent to 4.37 million units.

For models with an engine capacity between 1.6 liters and two liters, sales of two-wheel-drive SUVs rose 83.4 percent and four-wheel-drives were up 78 percent, compared with the first half last year.

This compared with a 25 percent increase for SUVs powered by engines bigger than two liters.

“Small-engine SUVs are more favored by Chinese consumers for daily use,” said Zhang Xin, an auto analyst from Guotai Jun’an Securities Co Ltd.

“The high gasoline price also prompted them to choose fuel-efficient models to cut costs.”

In March last year, China raised the tax on vehicles with an engine capacity larger than two liters from five to 20 percent and gave preferential rates on small cars to save energy and curb pollution.

China’s SUV market is still expanding because most buyers are first-timers more interested in fuel efficiency and car design than off-road functions.

The five best-selling SUVs in the first half were Hover made by Great Wall, Tiggo from Chery Automobile Co Ltd, Tucson made by Beijing Hyundai, Honda CRV and Liebao.
