My People, stop buying cars!

The Mayor of Shenzhen, the sleepy little village that became a big boom town on the orders of previous Chairman Deng Xiao Ping, has had it with his citizens and their car buying ways. Shenzhen is located next to Hong Kong and is a transit point for anyone entering or leaving Hong Kong, Shenzhens break neck development has stretched the limits of the urban road networks. The mayor, Xu Zongheng, quoted official statistics saying that the annual growth rate of cars in the city is 18.6%, he also said road construction crews cannot keep up with demand and 70% of the cities pollution is caused by cars.

We wonder if the Shenzhen city government itself will not buy any vehicles for its officials this year, or will they have suffer the indignity of having to use 2006 model Audi A4/A6′s for another year?

Also, last week, the mayor of Beijing decided to take 1 million cars off the streets.
