Theres a party going on at Chery – Chery make one millionth car

There is a party going in Wuhu city today. Wuhu is home to Chery motors, who just so happened to have made their millionth car, which at this point is a Chery A3. Chery have gone along way in the past ten years. In March 1997 they started work on making the factory, and two years later in 1999 they made their first car – the Chery Windcloud, based off the Seat Toldeo. In 2001 Chery teamed up with SAIC to ‘officially’ go on the market, until then, Chery had been illegally making cars in China but seeing as they were so small in Wuhu, they flew under the central government radar, but with the help of SAIC, they finally got a license to produce cars, fast forward to 2007, Chery has made its one millionth car and currently has 12 different cars in its line up, and that is expanding year after year with various different exciting designs.
The future is very bright for Chery, they are not going down the usual road that Chinese car manufacturers go down, of course we are talking about the long march into Europe and North American markets. We’ve seen Brilliance, Landwind etc try to enter these markets and fail miserably. Chery knows that if they are to enter developed markets, they must make developed vehicles i.e. vehicles that can easily contend with well established brands such as Honda, Toyota, Ford etc. Make no mistake about it, Chery is rapidly approaching that goal of making developed vehicles, no longer are they copying designs or buying old technology – they’ve designed their own ATECO engine (which they supply to Fiat) Chery are keeping car design houses all over the world busy with requests for new designs, designs that they are slowly starting to churn out.
Chery isnt just focusing on the domestic market, its export market is nearly as big as domestic design. Cherys ultimate goal, is to export cars into Europe and the USA. Europe it has already entered, albeit in a slightly different way with it supplying the body shell for the Italian SUV, DR. Judging from the map below, North America is surrounded by countries or territories that are importing and selling Chery cars, its just a matter of time until Chery enter the USA either under its own label, or as a Dodge vehicle.

Excellent snapshot for the new freshmen class to understand the evolution of this maverick Chinese automaker. But could you elaborate a bit on the Chery-DR relationship?
The DR car seems to be based off Gonow chassis and engine power, but with a modified Chery Tiggo bodyshell.
Im sure Erik will be able to give a lot more information.
Yes, I hope we can get his input as it’s a bit confusing. I was quite sure that the body did not come from Gonow, but it was also my understanding that the Chery Tiggo is a unibody design, i.e. no frame. And, Gonow as far as I know buys its engines from outside.
You are right – Its a mitsubishi engine.
