Beijing Hyundai – planning to go domestic

28 August 2007 6 Comments

Beijing Hyundai have come from behind, to being one of the market leaders in China. Before on China Car Times we talked about how the ‘QQ Killing’ Hyundai Getz is coming to China. Hyundai plan to have the car in production as early as January 2008, in addition, Beijing Hyundai also plan to produce the Hyundai Coupe in China to keep it competitive with up and coming Chinese coupes such as the MGTF, Brilliance Coupe etc etc. Currently the Hyundai Coupe is made in Korea and imported into China making it much more expensive. China Car Times believes we are on the verge of the Chinese autosports revolution at this rate, all we need is for MG to make the MG7 coupe, and we’re set.

Hyundai have also mentioned they will bring a third car to China early next year, but we at China Car Times are currently unsure as to what that car is. Could it be a self developed model for the Chinese market?

Hyundai’s QQ killer isn’t Getz; it is a hatchback based on next-generation Accent(Codename RB). Next generation Getz will be produced and exported out of India exclusively, while Hyundai’s QQ killer(RB) is for Chinese domestic market only.

Hyundai’s Chinese market line-up

- RB(Lowcost Accent Hatchback aka QQ Killer)
- Redesigned Accent
- Tiburon(With Hyundai’s Korean plant switching to VK RWD Tiburon with a 380 HP V8), the older FWD Tiburon production line moves to China)
- Chinese market only Elantra(Similar to current Elantra)
- Chinese market only Sonata(The first car to be engineered by Beijing Automobile based on Hyundai EF chassis. Different from redesigned 2009 YG Sonata for the US, Europe, and Korea)

Mr. I hate China,

Thanks for that explanation, I originally blogged that the Getz, and QQ killer were separate vehicles, but this time I got confused, and marked them as the same.

The Tiburon is the new Hyundai coupe? How come some coupes come with the ‘T’ logo, and others dont?

Is the latest generation of Sonata doing well in terms of sales around the world? It seems to be bombing in China, which is a shame as it is a visually stunning vehicle compared to its previous conception:

You should start Koreancartimes.com ;)

The brand name of Tiburon for each market

US : Tiburon
Korea : Tuscani
Europe : Hyundai Coupe

Sonata is doing excellent in Korea, doing so so(~120K/year) in the US, and bombed in Europe. YF Sonata is supposed to be smaller and much more sportier than the current NF Sonata, as BH Genesis takes over the large executive car segment that Azera used to fill and Sonata/Azera no longer faces the pressure to be big.

US/Europe/Korea : YF Sonata from 2009
China : There are two Sonatas being planned. One is reengineered EF Sonata by Beijing Automotive named “Sonata”. The other one is a reskinned NF Sonata called “Yuxiang.” There is no plan to bring YF Sonata to China as YF Sonata is going upscale in performance and is priced beyond Chinese market.
