Mazda 6 club target a Humvee, witch hunt ensues.

4 September 2007 45 Comments

China is a funny place – when you buy a car, you get offered the chance to join ‘a club’ for that particular model or brand of car, its not like joining the bloods or the crips in the aspect that you have to roll up a trouser leg and give out funny hand signals, but its not far off either.

Recently a Mazda 6 club went out for a  ‘meeting’ and found themselves on the Ningbo to Lianyungang expressway, there were 20 Mazda 6’s in total, some of them standard models and some tuned up by their owners, at least one of them had illegally added police sirens and lights to the rear of the Mazda 6 grill (China Car Times has a friend with added police mods, its great!)

The convoy of 20 Mazdas found a target to harass, a Humvee. In a style that hasnt been seen since 1840’s in the mid west of the USA, the Mazdas surrounded the Hummer from all sides and forced him to slow down to a tortoise like 30kph. The Hummer owner went crazy, honking his horn, trying to force his way out (as you would, in such a situation) the Mazda drivers were relentless, also honking their horns and refusing to let the Hummer out. You can see a video of the incident here.

To make matters worse, the group recorded the ‘attack’ on video cameras and took pictures, which they later uploaded to the internet expecting they would get rapturous audiences applauding them for their daring antics against the gas guzzling monster. Except they were wrong, an internet witch hunt campaign was started to track down the Mazda 6 owners from their license plates in the videos. Comments came in from all sides on various websites but the comments were mostly against the Mazda 6 drivers, several of the drivers home addresses, telephone numbers, and email addresses have been posted on the net.

What a bunch of idiots. Being in a car club? Great. Having road rallys/trips? Great. Intentionally bothering and interfering with another motorist on the road?? Stupid, idiotic and DANGEROUS. I hope they get caught and prosecuted to the full extent of the law – when will chinese drivers realize that when they are driving in a car they are driving a potentially LETHAL WEAPON that can KILL people??? What if the humvee driver decided to force his way out? There would be at least one Mazda 6 in the junkyard right now, and at least one driver in the hospital – or in the grave. It’s well known that China’s roads are the most dangerous in the world, and STUPID incidents like this don’t help AT ALL. You might think I’m a “china hater” – I’m not. I LIVE in China (4 years now) and things (in general) are getting better here all the time – except for the growing stupidity (or so it seems) of the drivers on the road.

Joninchina,

I was thinking the exact same thing, the power of a Humvee is many times that of a Mazda 6 and would crush it like Godzilla V’s building.

Also, dont tar us China drivers with the same brush – we aren’t all suicidal kamikaze drivers ;)

What a stupid bunch of bullies! They bothered not only the Humvee driver but also all the drivers in that road behind them, and to make it even more stupid the turn themselves in making a video, I hope they get caught and dont let them drive again. I dont know what kind of shit this people have in their head.

I wonder if there will be a car club for the Crazy Soldier. I can see it now, “Crazy Soldier car club harasses Mazda 6 on highway.” Will we see revenge attacks on Mazda 6’s from Hummer car clubs? I honestly would have forced the bastards off the road if I was the H2 owner.

Just got back from Pizza hut, there was a Hummer H2 or H3 parked next to a Mazda 6.

Hummer wheel is practically the same height as the Mazda front wings.

Im sad the Hummer driver didnt crush the Mazdas in a rage :(

Ashley –

Sorry about that – not ALL chinese drivers are bad (several of my chinese friends happen to be very GOOD drivers). I think part of the problem is the fact that I never see the police giving moving violations (at least where I live, which is Nanning) – as a result many drivers think they can pretty much do what they want….Nanning’s streets can get pretty scary at times!!

Are you that Nanning guy ;)

Im going to put a camera in my car from now on.

I saw a massive boat being towed down a major road by a tiny tractor over the weekend. The boat took up all four lanes on the back of a trailer. Did I mention it was wet, and rainy, and dark as it was 8pm on a Friday night hence rush hour?

This is the second time I have lived in Guangzhou and the traffic here has improved immensely since the first time (01-04)….. however about 70% of the total idiots are usually not on GZ plates, they are from other cities around here and hopefully they will feature on the darwin awards later.

I’ve been informed that the police here now have a quota for issuing fines for moving violations although it is more about revenue collecting than safety but things could/can/do change here frequently, at least GZ has no motorcycles riding on the footpath anymore… can’t say the same about cars going up one way streets yet though.

Back to the Mazda 6 issue…. Bloody morons. The Hummer should have given the car in front a little kiss and if the guy didn’t get the message he should have put the boot down and gently pushed over to the side of the road and drove off yelling “ni xihuan na ge pingguo ma?” “你喜欢那个苹果吗?” (I make no apologies for my bad Chinese).

I can only hope next year when the bulk of China’s WTO tariff agreements kick into force the prices will come down significantly. Im hoping to work in CHina as an ‘expert’ and hence bringing my own car (but cant due to this LHD/RHD issue), since I cant find any car i’d realistically want in China ie. no real ’sports’ car with reasonable muscle in China?? can some 1 shed some light on this myth?

My suggestion is to buy a Royaum. Its a Holden statesman but with the V6 in it. You can get the HSV kits from home and pimp it up a bit.. for power maybe turbo it with again, kits from home or rip an LS1 out of a V8 commodore and chuck that in. Nice open pipes should scare the ******* out of all the pedestrians, and anyone else who cuts you off.

hahaha that was a nice idea but the thing is i got a feeling the new Royaum (or rather the Park Avenue since the Zeta platform change) will be too expensive since its targeted at a different market. It far more expensive that the a normal commodore, and worst yet, theres is not kits for statesmen. The only logical thing i can come up with is importing a Pontiac GTO stateside. but im loosing hope, seems like its impossible to get some decent muscle in China, and as a mate of mine said, y do u need it? u’ll be stuck in jams most of the time, and i have to agree with him…maybe a i should just bring my R1. is there any rules preventing sports bikes???

Johnson, it would depend where you are and the “Guanxi”(magic word that although not always essential) you have. I guess it would be easier to import a GTO rather than the R1 because I’m pretty sure anything over 250cc is supposed to be banned….. In some cities bikes are banned altogether or difficult to get plates for.
I was talking about the older Royaum, the newer one (Parked up someones Avenue) just doesn’t seem right. The old one has been here since about 05 so there should be a few slightly cheaper second hand ones available now. I’m not a Holden man myself but there is a serious lack of anything that sounds like an 8 here…. everything is too muffled except for maybe the Mazda 6s on which thread we have taken over.

what a shame they dont have anything more than 250cc. a pontiac seems the only option

well another idea, here the hyundai sonata has a 176kw v6 engine which u can turbo charge. there are some nice NF elite kits and pipes for it,and its cheap. Does the China modelhave the same engine? I presume the NF sonata is available in China for around 180,000rmb?

From my limited knowledge I believe the Sonatas here are only 2L 4s. Similar to everything else in the same range. At 180,000rmb there are plenty of options, I think even a base Mondeo is around that price.

Most of the cars here seem to be slightly watered down versions of what western countries get so to get any sort of HP out of one will require a bit of tweaking. Most modified cars I have seen are all aesthetic mods, not performance orientated but that should change more when more of the little princes return from overseas after getting used to Jap imports in NZ,AU etc…. look for a rise in QQ mods and an even bigger rise in the road toll.

I guess it depends on budget and what size vehicle you are after. If your heart is set on real power then pick up a used Lexus like the one the taxi drivers dealt too for roughly 60-100,000 RMB and freshen it up. The engine should have hardly been thrashed but maybe have high KMs. Lextreme.com has a ton of info on building one of these into a fire snorting beast with a bit of luxury of course.

The biggest problem you will face modifying anything here is finding someone to do it properly. I think in the major cities it will be ok though, just do your homework before deciding on who will rip your engine apart.

I’m a poor teacher so my first car here is likely to be a Xiali or a QQ in which the first mod will be a roll cage…. lol

Maybe Ashley can set a category for people like horsepower junkies :)

I want something cheap and not too nasty. A Jetta is another option but having spent enough time in taxis I went off that idea a long time ago plus there are no straight ones here (GZ). I should just be patient and save more to buy something half decent…..nahhh. Any other engines fit in a QQ?

A roll cage is essential equipment while I am losing my sanity learning to drive in China… I am used to RHD and driving on the left.

You’re learning here?!?!?

I learned to drive here after coming from the UK – is what partly a bet from the wife, and partly a language test, and another part was dumb enough to do it.

It took me four months.

Im going to write about it eventually, it was much much much harder than the UK’s learning to drive system, and not just because of the language barrier. Its just…. much more intense training.

I need to get a license, no idea of the procedure yet. It’s one of those things I’ll get around too (have to if I want a car). Seeing I’m spoilt by getting picked up and dropped off for work there hasn’t been an urgent need yet. Planning to move and get a car around the spring festival so better get onto it.

I remember a place in Shanghai that had a driving course in a kind of driving park. It was beside an RC car track. No use to me now though living in Guangzhou.

Where are you finding these? Most of the car mods seem to coming out of Guandong!

I really like the Livina, I think its a great little car and its surprisingly fast from 0-80 for such a small car, although it weighs practically nothing and has a 1.6 engine.

A supercharger will probably blow the engine. A carbon fiber hood – what color is yours? Might look a bit odd. Best if its black?

my Livina is Black and the carbon fiber hood iam getting is a stock copy. i dont like the real flashy hoods. and a supercharger wont blow the engine they are much safer for the car compared to turbos and the 1.6l DOHC is sick totally tuneable its the same motor thats in the TIIDA that china uses to race and thoes are sick

no one asked what you think in America lol BTW I am from California and if this hapend no one would call them an asshole but the owner of the hummer would be going to jail for shooting a lot of people lol cause thats what really happens. anywas I went to http://www.auto-aoli.com s shop and bought my carbon fiber hood and it will take them 3 days to have it delivered to their shop and then ill go down to install it and ill let you guys know how it goes. also i asked them some other stuff like the Nissan Livina has reas drum breaks and they said they could use the Tiida rear breaks to convert it for me and also they said they could make a proper body kit for me and not a lip kit which is so common here in Guangzhou right now> its a cool shop they are a little expensive considering were in china lol but they seem like cool people and if you dont speak chinese you will need to take someone with you who does because they dont speak much english. the carbon fiber hood is 1,800rmb its just a stock hood copy the hood with a scoop is a little more than 2,000rmb and i havent got a price for the break conversion oh and you can get a nice HKS muffler for 3,500rmb and a carbon fiber wing for 850rmb instead of the genaric fiberglass wing okay well ill hit you up later with more details
