New Mondeo uses old engine in China

The new Mondeo is a good looking car, its slightly longer, slightly wider, and slightly taller than its previous incarnation, but in China the two Mondeos seems to be using the same engine, did Chang’an overproduce the old generation Mondeo engine and stick it in the new Mondeo to clear out some stock room space? The engines model no CAF488Q2 seems to be a uniquely Chinese engine and seems to be different from the Volvo-Ford designed engine being used in European Mondeos, or are we missing something?

Maybe it’s just cheaper since the emissions controls are different in China. I remember reading how Ford was phasing out certain engines in the Euro Mondeo in anticipation of the new Euro emissions. In the states we had a similar situation when the Ford Focus was introduced. For the first year or two it was still using the engines from the Ford Escort (Ford CVH engine).

I think it’s not because of the emission controls. Generally China has a lower emission control standard than Europe. But in Beijing and Shanghai the emission control is nearly the same as European cities.

That’s how the giant multinational carmakers cheat Chinese customers!

Well, if I were Ford, I wouldn’t exactly give my Chinese partner the latest and greatest tech. Industrial espionage is rampant and if I were to have any sort of tech stolen, it would choose the outdated tech.
