I still seek to locate a new GWM Safe 4 x 4 in my color (Bright Chrome Yellow) and have waited over 3 years. I am always told to order to get what I wanted, but the last 2 orders cost me much RMB and offered me nothing but black and sorrow.
Of course the Hoover looks better, but that is all just outer skin and costs much more for the cosmetic additions.
Getting a hoover suv and never taking it off road is like buying an excalade just for pretty looks and the name Cadilac.
I hate to think that I may be forced to buy a Toyota or a Nissan instead.

The car would hardly go with an automatic. That Mitsubishi engine has got about as much life in it as a corpse.

Yes the Safe is a Toyota Hilux Surf. They said as much to me but as for the licensing or whatever of it I’m not so sure.

If Great Wall stuck an auto box in the Hover like they said they were always going to do, Id have one in an instant.

Whats the deal with the GWM Safe, is that just a Toyota Hilux underneath the gaudy stickering?

Yes I was at the factory. The interior simply doesn’t suit the exterior. Reckon they should push up the price and give the car the interior it deserves. However, the all grey interior version looks OK.

I only hear that it was a licensing agreement for the shell and the rest was self designed.

Are you out test driving? If so I recommend their latest turbo diesel model, its pretty good, although the interior is lacking to be honest.

All Internet reports claim it’s a copy of the Axiom riding on a 4Runner chassis. However, the company strenuously denies this and says it was completely developed in China. Does anyone know about any licensing agreement or legal cases over IPR to do with this vehicle. An Internet search has so far just given a lot of hearsay with no real evidence.

I just think the Chinese USV’s are not such, they are more like the same little cars made bigger and spacious but at the end the same little cars. I dont know but there is something thay does not feel wright about this Chinese USV’s, they dont have the toughness and reliability of brands as Toyota, Chrysler-Jeep. Even brands without tradition in USV’s such as VW, BMW, Volvo, Lexus, Audi, manage to create an amazing mix of great design and toughness.

This car for me still look way to PLASTICKY and not reliable at all.

Of course Japanese are about 5 years ahead not only in design but also in technology, compare to the rest of the world. The Odyssey here in China (JAPANESE DESIGN) is way superior in design, thats is natural in Japanese products.

Another thing is the taste of the americans, lets face it the americans go more for power rather than design, the target for this car is the average american family which like oversized cars and when it comes to taste they have one of the worst ever.
Of course Honda will give them what they want, what they like.

Its funny because in my country, Venezuelathe target for this car is executive, big companies in Venezuela use this car for high level staff transportation and we also use the Japanese version. The good looking one.

Please Ash, give me break. Hopefully Im a little more sophisticated than that loud mouthed yank! But I can well understand his frustration and anger. My case rests again with the fact that here is more proof that Chinese designed and built cars are crap. I have just spent the last weekend in a 2.3l FAW Besturn, and whilst its not going to win any performance stakes I was impressed with its handling, quality and finish. Im not sure long term how it will hold up against normal driving and general wear and tear though. Even though it is based on the Mazda 6 I am seeing some light at the end of the tunnel for SOME larger more responsible Chinese manufactures.

It is easy to see why it tops the sales league. It is a very nice looking vehicle from the ones I have seen running around Shanghai. It looks good from all angles. I have not managed to look inside so cannot comment at all on interior. I would not be ashamed to be seen in one which is more than can be said for some of the other shocking examples of SUV’s on sale in China right now.

Remember, this vehicle is a licensed version of the Isuzu Axiom. The vehicle has a mild update to the front but I wouldn’t say it’s a Chinese designed vehicle. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isuzu_Axiom There’s a piece on the Hover in Wiki as well, however, I don’t think it’s accurate (claims the chassis is from Toyota). I won’t post inaccurate links. Too bad Great Wall didn’t get the license for the 250hp direct injection V6 for the Hover:(

Because it looks great – its on par with the Jap variants (i.e. the CRV, RAV 4, Highlander etc) in the looks department and is reasonbly dependable because of its Mitsubishi engine.

The interior is top notch and the car performs both on and off road.
