Zotye 2008 gets a makeover for 2008

The Zotye 2008, the small city SUV which is a based on the Daihatsu Terios (we are told now that it is legally based – although this was the dealer talking) has been given a make over for 2008.

Zotye brought out the Mitsubishi engined 1.3L or 1.5L motor in 2006 but never updated it for 2007, however, for 2008 Zotye have thought long and hard about a new image. Zotye have stuck on some rubber bumpers and a new blue dashboard for ’08.

Honestly speaking, the Zotye 2008 for 08 isnt a bad looking vehicle, although the design for 2008 is essentially the same as 06 with plastic bumpers and a newer grill the car looks more modern.

That feisty little upstart Zotye must have something going for it if Fiat is giving it a tumble. It’s tiny now but it may be one worth watching. Seems that Daihatsu knockoff won’t be its only offering for long.

We haven’t seen too much activity from Daihatsu in the last years, as I understand this company was absorved by Toyota group and the terios was a model they launched about 7 years ago if im not wrong, so this car need more than a makeover because is an old car already.

What is the situation here, its kind of a mix that I dont understand?

Daihatsu played a pretty big part in the early industry days of the late 80s and 90s, when it teamed with Tianjin Industrial, building Xiali taxis and Huali minicars. But now that its (long time) parent, Toyota, is active in China, it seems to have taken a back seat.
Zotye claims that it does have a license from Daihatsu to produce, and I guess modify, the old Terios mini SUV.

btw I do agree Ashley that the Xenia’s not making much of an Xplosion in the marketplace these days.

Its not a surprise, the Xenia seems a bit expensive for the small engine that offers and the look. To me looks more like a improvement of the Terios. I checked their website and they seem pretty active celebrating the 100th anniversary and showing new models in Frankfurt (pretty good looking cars by the way).

Its weird because their models seem to fit very good for the chinese market.

      • avatar Ashley says:

They have a 1.5 7 seater Xenia for a fraction less than 100k, the interior is awful.

The door/ ignition key looks like it would be better paired to a padlock.

I think the interior is out of one of their mid 90′s mini 4×4 things.

        • avatar mundosanto says:

. What kind of car is this Xenia. Its a mini SUV?, mini Van?, 4×4?

Maybe they are not interested in the chinese market at all, perhaps they launched this Xenia in response of the chinese reproduction of the Terios.

      Dragin,

Daihatsu and Subaru were early players in the Chinese market, but they’ve retracted from the market faster than anything to let Toyota take the wheel.

Very odd. Subaru could have/would have been massive by now, the same with Daihatsu. I wonder what the reasoning behind it actually is.

  4. avatar dragin says:

Fuji Heavy Industries never succeeded in making even a small dent in the China market, despite its early start in a venture with Guizhou Aviation. Subaru’s only offerings there, and at the now-defunct Jilin Tongtian, were minicars. The last model of the Guihang-Subaru venture was the Skylark called a WOW. Somehow Subaru never even came close to capturing a niche 4X4 market in China, as it so cleverly did in the U.S.. Considering all the other Japanese makers’ inroads into the China market, I like you Ashley, just shake my head. One might say that its failure in China kind of mirrors Daihatsu’s failure in the U.S..

  7. avatar Chris says:

Why is that in this time and age you produce a modern car that does not have such safety gadgets like air-bags?
