BYD to mass produce electric car!

byd-f6-electro.jpgBYD recently announced plans to mass produce the BYD F6, you might be thinking ‘eh? BYD already mass produce the F6!’ this time BYD are going to roll out a fully electric F6 model, not a hybrid but a true plug-in electric car.

BYD has apperently created a new kind of battery that uses iron, China Car Times is not battery expert, but what we’ve been told is that no other battery manufacturer uses iron in their batteries. BYD says it had 500 workers on the iron battery that it says will be used in the future in everything from cars to mobile phones to laptops.

What has BYD named this incredible invention after spending what must be millions and millions of RMB on R&D? They’ve called it ‘ET-POWER’, thats right, ‘ET-POWER’. China Car Times pictures a little alien and a kid riding a bicycle across a miniature moon in every battery.

The BYD F6e (e being electric) will be produced next year in the Shenzhen reigon where BYD’s parent company (a mobile phone battery maker, funnily enough) has its headquarters. BYD claims that their battery can be recharged upto 2000 times before it starts to degrade, and rather impressively the BYD F6e batteries can be fully charged in 20 minutes, but BYD didnt announce any other specs such as top speed, acceleration etc in their announcement.

BYD also announced another product, the BYD F6DM. ‘DM’ means dual mode, this will be BYD’s shot at a hybrid that is likely to be used in China. In China, electric vehicles fall into a gray area where in some big cities electric cars are not allowed to be anywhere but in the bicycle lane as the local D.M.V wont issue license plates for them, but some other smaller cities actively encourage the use of Chinese designed and built electric cars and will happily allow the D.M.V to put plates on the mini cars.

BYD are easily going to place themselves as one of the worlds leaders in electric car design and manufacturing over the next few years. If you want the BYD F6E you’ll have to wait until mid 2008 when it is finally rolling off the production line.

I can see 100 meter long extension cables hanging out the apartment windows each night….insulating tape included where some guy a few floors tapped into it to get some free power…. lol

If the design is good then its good step forward for BYD. Not often we hear of original ideas coming from Chinese manufacturers… big thumbs up :) My guess is BYD (senior) was looking for new ways to make cash so did a bit of R&D and came up with the new idea for a battery, hope the specs are good when they come out.

look ummmmm i hope these batteries charge super quick, otherwise it’ll be virtually useless for long, or even medium trips across city in traffic jams….assuming there will be gas stations allowing u to charge the cars

Who needs a gas station, an enterprising local will put a sign outside his/her place and give them a charge for a fee… negoitable of course.

Yes, this is where BYD’s strength is. And so it should give up making Mercedes Benz lookalike convertibles(F8), and stick to what it does best. China’s environment will reap the rewards.
These rechargeable Fe iron batteries (the BYD F3-E has 96 of them)apparently produce less heat, and are thus safer than the Li lithium ion that GM is using, and that Toyota is more cautiously (planning to use).

This is hard to believe. Can’t the central government come down on the head of these teradactyls?…..
No, I guess that wouldn’t be very democratic now would it…..

I think that legislation is aimed more at the electric motorcycles than cars. In Guangzhou all motorbikes and electric cycles are banned from the city streets for safety reasons (drive by theft mostly) but if they start making electric cars the local govt would most likely change the rules for them….. after a few incentives of course…. don’t know how the batteries will last with people sitting on the horn so the pedestrians know they are there though, especially seeing no one looks when crossing the road.

Any drawbacks to this battery??? It sounds too good to be true…

If the battery is so good, why the giants such as GM and Toyota not using them???

The same reason they killed off the EV1….. too gutless to stand up to the oil companies…. Plus the lost revenue from selling spare parts…

The BYD battery is too new to say its any good, but fingers crossed :)

Its BYD own tech!

They originally were battery makers for mobile phones, and other battery carrying appliances. They know their batteries do BYD.

I’ll answer your question with a question.
Who Killed The Electric Car?
EV vehicles go a long way to solving reliance on
fossil-fuel and the resulting political and economic
instability. Please don’t negate this by saying that
they are charged using fossil fuel.
1) they don’t have to be.
2) the charging is much more efficient than the ICE.

The entire world should use renewable energy in this century. WIND,SOLAR, NUCLEAR, NUCLEAR FUSION. Developed nations should provide the technologies and know-how to developing nations for a minimum price.

Very few people can park next to their houses in China , but stop anywhere in any city in China and tell somebody that you will pay five Yuan for some electricity for 20 minutes and you would have five people willing to help you . The next day or later that same day a sign would appear that you can charge up your electrical car here for five Yuan maybe even four Yuan.

This byd F6e or F6DM can drive 430km per time.
The max life of the battery is around the 600,000km.
Maximum speed is not the fast, 160km/h
If u buy this car and charge it at home, will cost u 9 hours for 430km distance. BYD is building or planning or has already finished in cooperation with existing petrol station an eletric recharge station which cost 10 minutes to recharge your battery for 50%, so it is right that it will cost 20 minutes to recharge fully.

this car is very impressive…would love to know the features. Duel mode sounds interesting like the next advancement past hybrid. This car would be a hit in the states but BYD will need to position themselves soon. I work personally for an advertising agency and all of the planning, internet, agency work, events, etc. to pre-sell and position the brand ahead of the launch take time…BYD could potentially be an import leader.
