BYD F1, worlds cheapest car ever

BYD really are going to mass produce the worlds cheapest automobile and bring cheap motoring to the masses in China, previously the BYD F1 price tag was 30,000rmb but now it seems that figure has been changed down to a mere 23,000rmb.
Previously, the record was held by the Binzhou automotive group, but seeing as they are not mass produced, we can forget about them. The cheapest 800cc QQ3 is 27,000rmb, Ben Ben, Hafei Sai Bao, Suzuki WagonR’s, Little Nobels etc are all 30,000rmb and up.
While we’re not entirely sure what the BYD will be running under the hood, or what it will be made of, we’re quite excited (or worried) to see that Chinese manufacturers are pushing the boundries on the car pricing, the BYD is a smidgen over 3000USD. China Car Times previously got up close and personal with little Nobel and noted the interior quality, was not the greatest. Generally, the BYD range of cars are quite well made, but at 3,000USD what is this going to be like?
BYD make a profit on this, the government gets a cut on it, the logistics co will want a cut for sending it to the dealer, the dealer will also want a cut for selling it and supporting it, so just how much does it cost for BYD to make this car, $2000USD? Guesses in the comment box.

I have been considering buying one of these since it was announced a little while ago. Not a fan of the rear end but not something to worry about when in the drivers seat.
If they used the Engine out of the Flyer then it would have cut down on costs a lot.
I wouldn’t expect much in the way of luxuries on the cheapest model though such as no air con, electric windows ,steel wheels etc, ABS, etc but they could surprise us…
Looks like BYD are going to make a good effort to compete in the mini car market.
Yeah, I wouldnt mind one either as long as its reasonbly safe. I drive 7km every morning in a bigger engine car and back again at lunch, it just seems like a waste. I think a 0.8cc motor would be great for doing that run.
Of course, a motorbike would be better but the Chinese police seem to have taken a heavy dislike to the two wheeled option in recent years.
Plus its cold in winter.
This car looks very acceptable and not like some of the ugly monstrosities of budget city cars that are being marketed right now.
If they stick a 3 cylinder or a 0.8 ltr in there it will do the job nicely. Who needs alloy wheels when it is going to bounce of a few kerbs in the concrete jungle from time to time.
You can tell which car is owned by a bird in China, just by looking at the state of the alloys.
Last time I posted pics of the BYD F1, a few commentors said it was a clone of a Toyota Aygo?
and they’d be right…
spot the difference
I can’t imagine Toyota will be too happy with this Aygo clone.
Kindly some body send me the web site of this car pleace BYD F1, worlds cheapest car ever.
The light weight of this model makes it look like a prime candidate for a hybrid powertrain. But like Ashley has said, that may push the price up out of reach for the small car customer.
Electric motor = less than a 1k USD, batteries are at least 5k USD for decent ones.
This could be a pretty decent electric car for $10k or less!
Regarding cheap cars:
When I visited Xian earlier this year, I saw a lot of three-wheelers. They were obviously built by modifying ordinary cars – I remember one with a narrowed QQ3 body, but there were many others.
Does anybody have any information on these? Are they a local phenomenon in Xian, or do you find them all over the country? And why modify a car to make a three-wheeler? Who makes them?
Three wheelers are motorcycles, not cars. If you get in one, the driver grabs the handlebars of the motorcycle to drive. The motor,… everything is motorcycle except the shell that is put around it, at least here in Chongqing.
The F1 is an almost perfect copy of the Toyota Aygo. The C pillar is modified a little, and the outline of the front lights is also modified, but otherwise: Toyota Aygo. This might by OK for China, but would make export impossible, I guess.
Even better, if I do buy one I will put Ford badges on it just to confuse people even more……
Chery autorickshaw lol
y Ford? if you are going to make the effort, might as well stick on the Prancing Stallion…ur guaranteed to impress a few…abeit for a few seconds
Seen too many of those ugly Geely things with prancing horses…. could be worse, I could degrade a Holden and put a Buick badge on it
. Johnson, you have been pretty quiet lately…..
its been a pretty hectic time for my self, exams and internship applications which may very well take me to Shanghai for a few months. Looking forward to it.
There are news out that the Holden VE Commodore SS is sold a good $20000 cheaper in the US than what we pay for it here, and even with paddle shifters! so i guess ur right, GM has been degrading out Holden for a long time! I cant beleive we are actually subsidising yanks buying our glorious Holden!! At least throw a few Cameros our way….
http://www.caradvice.com.au/7457/no-manual-for-pontiac-g8/
at that price, this should definately be taken up by Shanghai GM. It well designed, relatively cheap (considering its a $50K car here), all automatic, fast and powerful, and definately a good looking car (well, to me at least).
I thought we already had done that and called it the Buick Park Avenue! Chinese VE with local styling content by our old chums over in PATAC.
Buick Park Avenue is a more luxurious model, equivilent to the Statesman. the SS is more mid-tier
LOL, I think we can see how much of a cash cow Holden is to GM now. $20,000 cheaper is not fair, think how many more they would sell in Au if they sold them at that price? (which they never would). Gives you another option later if you stay in Shanghai…
I heard the new Camaro is going to NZ, not sure about Au.. It will be badged as a Chevy there… don’t quote me though.
23,000 rmb??? Wow, that’s got to be a BARE BONES car – 4 wheels, a engine, steering wheel, a couple of seats and a “hat” to go on top of it!! I THINK they’re going to offer different engine sizes – 0.8 and 1.0 liter. I would opt for the 1.0, add a few options (a/c, power windows and a CD player) and it would probably be priced in the 30,000-33,000 rmb range – a GREAT deal. Perfect for city car duties, AND large enough to do some provincial driving. I don’t mind driving a “Chi-go” (Chinese Aygo) if I can do it for around 30,000 rmb – sign me up! BYD is CERTAINLY making some major moves in the auto industry……..hopefully they can hire a IN HOUSE designer with all the money they’re making and stop being so “inspired” by Toyota’s designs!!
Well this car make my point, A CHEAP CAR DONT HAVE TO BE UGLY, considering the price and the brand I think is not bad at all compared with other cars in the same price range, It looks a little mix between the Toyota Aygo and the Nissan Micra, but anyway I would consider buy one of this.
This is not only a simple ripoff of the Aygo. This is stealing Toyota’s intellectual property and industrial design as we speak.
When will China stop pirating other people’s work?
When will people stop posting useless comments like these?
Wojtek, you are more than welcome to contact Toyota and express your desire for them to take appropriate action action against BYD Group using the appropriate legals channels available to them in China.
woxihuanpijiu you have got to be kidding me, look at the side-by-side comparisons between the F1 and the Aygo and you can see that they are almost mirror images of each other… come on, other automotive blogs have titles like “BYD to build world’s most expensive Photochop cheapest car at $3,000″
it’s ridiculous to actually try to legitimatize this company by writing statements like, “Looks like BYD are going to make a good effort to compete in the mini car market” when they’re copying Toyota’s designs… and plus China’s regulatory framework is structured so that copyright and intellectual property are almost irrelevant considering most multi-national corporations need the government ‘on their side’ to gain access to the 1+ billion in China
do you actually believe that this company is legitimate?
he’s back…..rofl
Actually that is not a surprise! We have been talking for a while about how chinese companies copy without any shame, I have to agree with Wojtek and Jae, any argument to try to legitimatize this company and any copied product would be the real useless comment.
Woxihuanpijiu I know you always try to stand for the chinese made products but you have to face the fact that this kind of copies are a lack of respect to the industry, costumer, designers and even more the same company. The chinese companies have to learn to create their own products and stop bad-copying others, and here Im not just talking about car. Im talking about everything from textiles until heavy duty machinery chinese companies copy everything, and thers is no excuse for that, that is a crime, is punishable.
I was going to post a really nasty reply but figure it’s not in the interest of the site…however for all things copied you can direct your comments to these people and they might help you. http://english.ipr.gov.cn/en/services/copyright/LAC.shtml
Jae, to answer your questions… yes and yes.
To mundosanto, i hate to admit it but i am a law student, and everytime some one tells me its a crime i think to my self does this person know what he or she is talking about? or are they simply making a general statement of how they’d like to see the law to be. First of all, I do not know where you come from, but the IP laws of the PRC may different very much so from what your country has in place. Indeed the PRC has an adequate IP policy, at least on paper. The fact that all these alleged infringements by car dealers, or indeed other manufacturers are not taken to court does not mean that the legal system is at fault. And if the copyright owner does not choose to take up their right in a court of law then that too is not exceusable dont you think, if their negate their right? Secondly, IP infringements in China and indeed in most common law countries are civil offences. So in that case it is not a crime per se, it is not subject to state prosecution and to that effect it is not punishable, again, per se. So really, the burden is left to the copyright owners, it is their duty to bring the matter to court and prove their case. It is like that around the world, and China is no different.
Thirdly, given your convictions and how strong you feel about the issue, it might be worth your while researching about the IP abuses in China. Yes, you will find that many products are knock-offs, that being, attemepted copies assuming the original products design and brand, most noticably in clothing. But a vast majority of higher tech products are not like that. Most make substantial design modifications, upgrades and asethetical changes which in law render them different products. The case required to prove an actual infringment of IP rights, for exmaple of a car will include any patented designs or materials, as well as the copyright on the original drawn desgins of the car are vastly which will be hard to establish, given that these tests operate on the basis of ‘substantial similarity’ and being able to establish ‘prior knowledge’ and a causal link. Having said that, can you be so absolutely convinced that based on a photograph that the vehicle is a copy? Do they share the same engine? drive train? suspension? interior desigs? length? width? materials used? targeted market? original conception date? and the list goes on. All of these factors will need to be assessed to gain a complete picture of the alleged copy. I think that it will be impoissible to pass judgement simply by looking at a picture. Perhaps the car being Chinese already made the decision for you? What I am saying is that its simple for your to make allegations, but they have to be substantive. The fact that very few of these cases, in China at least, goes to court is a testament to the inability of manufacturers to relieve thier burden of proving such an overwhelming case. If there is a breach, we shall let a court be the judge of that. In the meantime the prejudice directed towards BYD or other Chinese car markers are simply weak opinions at best.
And lastly, you must understand that copying has been apart of technological developement of a country’s industries for many decades, it was prevalent the time after in the late 19th and early 20th century for the US to copy european designs, then after WWII for the japanese and koreans to copy US designs. It has a part to play in innovation as it often leads to lower costs of production and competition. Perhaps the most important thing is that this phenonmenon exists because there is market demand for it. So before you shift all blame and burden on Chinese manufactuers, perhaps fix this demand issue as I can gaurantee you its not restricted to China.
P.S I am eagerly waiting for a test case in a common law jurisdiction.
woxihuanpijiu I dont see why you feel offended Im sure is not in the spirit of nobody here to attack you, so nasty comments or arcasm are way out of the line. Anyway thanks for the informaton about the intelectual porperty protection, since Im not the owner of the rights for this design I have nothing to do with that, but if Im design something and some chinese company dare to copy my designs I will use it for sure. We are here to give opinions not to attack others or make judgements about other comments and opinions, lets try to keep the good environment around here…. Peace!
JOHNSON thanks a lot for the information that clarifies a lot of points about Intellectual Porperty, so if I understand regarding to the law there is no offence until there is somebody offended. What happen in cases like BMW against Soueast for the BMW X5, I would say is exactly the same situation, probably the F1 its just a photoshop trick we have to wait until BYD launches the car to the market, but again it wouldnt be a surprise if they actually copied the Aygo, keep happening again and again, they just dont stop copying.
I’m still holding my tongue….
Johnson, thanks for the info. I wanted to say something with a lot more colourful language.
Mundosanto, my original comment was aimed at yet another person who comes here, sees the pic and straight away assumes its a copy because it looks like another vehicle…. Broken records always sound like s%^% don’t they? Too many China haters, if they don’t like it they are welcome to leave China or stop buying Chinese goods…. but I bet most won’t because they are either too cheap or are making money off the Chinese…
Obviously you are making this way too personal, let just drop it right here, just an advise, learn to accept other people opinions with an open mind. Take good care mate!
I think you already took it past that point yourself…… Issue dropped till the next time….
Jajajajajaja I think is the second time we run into each other in this way, I hope the next time we agree in a better way. Just for the record I dont hate Chinese in any way, how could I? this have been my home and family for more than one year.
Anyway no hard feelings again, recieve a big hug!
Okie…………..
Those of us who have spent some time in China will know that you get what you pay for here. Cheap equals crap, the cheapest equals truckloads of the same!
I think the photos are a photoshop…

in my opinion, BYD F1 is very suitable for chinese family.
more people can afford the price to exprience “car life”.
And Ethans comment just highlights the root cause of the Chinese auto industry!
what is the exact price
hey idiots, look at the design of all the cars, its been copied from other car companies like honda, toyota and i cant believe they even copied mercedes in ditroy’s car show. the pictures are online.

unfortunately, i read that the tata nano is $2480 (£1300) but if they could export the BYD F1 to UK and other countries, it could make a good competitor. the car looks like a cross between a honda jazz and a toyota aygo, but if a car is cheap it could make personal transport affordable to anybody in the world.
hi i am kamaljeet singh from india . i am working in a auto mobile company. this car looks superb. but unfortunately its not available in india. the company should launch this car in india. so that the people of india can compare this car with indian cheapest car Tata Nano. and they will have more option.
If this car came in the market, i will also be the one to be at its driver’s seat. Can you inform me via my email about it’s launch, hopefully it will also be introduced in Nepal.
How can any company hope to achieve credibility by merely copying others designs?
This blatant copy of the car marketed in europe at the Toyota Aygo, Citroen C1 and Peugeot 107 is a clear demonstration of a total lack of creativity and original design.
Haven’t they got any ideas of their own?
They might as well go the whole way and add a 3-cylinder engine, just like the real ones!
Wow! I just read all the posts here. Crazy. Have to love all the last ones asking to buy the car through this site. Reminds me of all the Nigerian Ebay scams.
I have a relative in Nigeria that passed away. Due to the legal system we need a foreign bank account to pass the money to. Then we can collect our inheritance. If you can give us your bank account information we can transfer all the money to your account. Then you can keep $10,000 of it and return the rest to us. lol
Would like to get brochures of F1.
If available in RHD models, want to get
one immediately.
I would like to buy these car and i live in africa is it possible to get?
