After letting the world think that Nanjing MG just boxed up the British Longbridge factory and shipping it around the world to make old cars for a new market, it seems Nanjing MG have surprised the automotive world again by showing off a concept car that is very likely to be put into production in the near future.
From Austin-Rover.co.uk:
Car Design News has recently reported on the 2007 China Automotive Design Conference, which was the first occasion on which Designers from many of the nascent Chinese OEMs had met to discuss the need for ‘independent innovation’ in Chinese automotive styling.
The China Automotive Design Conference was held in Nanjing, Jiangsu at the end of August and was attended by 140 design professionals from the likes of Dongfeng Motor, First Auto Works (FAW), SAIC Motor, Brilliance, Chang’an, Chery, Geely and Nanjing Automobile (NAC).
NAC’s Design Director, Li-Chih Fu, was one of several Designers to speak at the conference and, during his presentation; he revealed a full-size hatchback concept, which was, reportedly, inspired by the city of Nanjing’s symbolic ‘Pi Xie’ statue. Car Design News commented that Li-Chih Fu’s concept ‘demonstrated an interesting way of blending negative surfaces with stylistic curved edges to create a balance between Chinese decoration and modern solidity.’
Car Design News’ report gives no indication about whether the ‘Pi Xie Concept’ might be intended for production and, if so, whether any production version might have an MG badge. However, AR’s Editorial Team reckon that this concept does, at least, demonstrate that NAC appear to be developing products to succeed the MG-Rover-derived models currently being readied for production.

Looks like the tooling for those body panels could set NAC back a bit. It’s a far cry from the current Soyat and Unique models.
Prehaps, this car is next soyat car, not new MG cars
The TCV lives again!
www.macdroitwich.com
It may live again, but why oh why are chinese manufacturers so intent on producing cars with strange crease lins down then, wings that have too much metal on them (giving the car a bottom heavy look) and wheels that look like they belong on a childs pedal car. Oh and tail lights that look not unlike those on the Ford
C-Max.
This is a monstrous design, let’s hope it never sees the light of day!
I guess the Chinese can’t win. First, they’re accused of copying, now they come up with innovative designs, and they get criticized again. I happen to like that design.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, however individuall design doesn’t make for good design. Perhaps a little help from established designers is required.
It also has no wing mirrors.
I think it looks really fresh, especially for the MG brand, which is pretty much seen as an old Grandpas brand. This might just change the situation around in the UK.
It has video cameras hidden in the tail lights instead of wing mirrors - OK as long as you aren’t towing a caravan!
It may look “really fresh” now but in 20 or 30 years time will it still look as good as todays 20 or 30 (or even 60) year old MGs? Maybe it will with a bit more work…
Who needs wing mirrors?? Certainly not in Chongqing!
@ Colin G
if you are that good and professional so why not work for GM or Toyota instead of comming here and complain ?
Are you implying that GM has good looking vehicles? Toyota, on the other hand…
GM has some good looking vehicles, Aveo, Epic etc.
Good, and CHEAP!
I don’t mean that . I was just suggesting something to that colin guy cos he seems to be one annoying guy.
all people want rover mark alive. this is not the same TCV. absolutely denied. this is not the same design
lol
This Colin G guy is funny, he complained about Chery P11 for having everything oversized now he comes here to complain about Nanjing car for being undersized. Guess what Colin G, that is just your opinion, not everyone will think that way.And stop complaining and as I said if you think you are that good then go to GM or Toyota and design cars for them there.
I have never said I was good at designing cars (hence why I am not a car designer). However, as a car enthusiast I know (in my own mind) when a design is wrong, and I thought these forums were for people to publish thoughts on what they see. So if something is over the top (ie grilles) or too small (ie wheels) then this is the place to comment. But as you say it’s my opinion and I’ve never said it was teh opinion of all. So get off your high horse and get back to chatting about cars instead of slting someone for having an interest in what’s published. It’s a car website (the clue is in the name of the website). So let the car discussion commence!
what a load of sh-t the only thing nac mg have got going for them is british designs and that’s taken 3 years to produce what longbridge already had at the end of production. What nanjing and the other one saic seem to forget it was the people assets of longbride and coventy than made mg rover and not the metal, the next gen of mg (the chinese mg) will in my mind have no place Stand by mgf mga midget or B.
Sorry, but if I think about MG, I do not think about heavy, boring SUVs. If this will come, then it is another step to the end of a great brand. A SUV with a MG badge is definitely a wrong decision. A MG has to be an emotional, individually car, but sadly it seems to be over. It looks like, that after my MG ZS 180, I have to move to Jaguar.
This looks like an old BMW/Rover concept from a while back. I only remember seeing the backend of it, but it looked very similar to this.
