Chinese reactions to oil price hikes
China Car Times has taken these comments from various Chinese language articles about the oil increase for your pleasure:
- From today, Im going to drive an electric car!
- I ride a motorbike, and it hurts my pocket!
- China is caving in
- Is this the legendary ‘Socialism with Chinese characteristics?’
- Socialism is great – prices rise, but our wages dont!
- I hope it goes up to 10rmb a liter, this way we’ll all ride our bikes again and loose weight.
- Prices rises are good, this means less cars on the road and we wont always have traffic jams!
- Im off to open a bike factory!
- The Chinese car industry only just got off the starting blocks, and it receives a punch in the gut.
- Lets go to the Middle East and steal their oil!
Although these are only ten comments out of the thousands we’ve seen today, you can understand the general feel in China about the price rise, its going to hit the people hard in their pockets, especially those in inland cities where 100rmb a month difference in bills is actually quite a bit of money!

Simple really if you are buying so much oil on the big world market and creating supply problems as China is, then of course the prices will rise-simple economics! But dont bleat when you have created the problem and learn to put up with the consequences. But as we who live here know – there is no consequence for actions taken.
Doesnt China have a fairly healthy amount of domestic oil, especially in Xinjiang area? I know the Dongbei area, especially Da Qing only has 30 years left, and a further 20 years of oil sands.
On another note, there is a lot less traffic on the roads this Saturday! Im all for fuel price rises now! I think I could go to ten rmb a liter before it starts to effect me.
@ Dog tucker: It’s kind of pejorative to say China is creating the problem. Why isn’t it America who uses more more gas per person? If the West drove smaller, more efficient cars like the East maybe there wouldn’t be such a supply problem.
Personally, I’m tired of giving money to oil companies and sick and tired of the pollution that internal combustion cars cause. I can’t wait until we’re all driving electric cars powered by wind and solar.
