Spyshots: Geely to launch Geely URGHHHH!

geely_aoo.jpg

This car, named the Geely ‘Aoo’ is to be unveiled at the Guangzhou Auto Show later this year, but we think it deserves an airing on China Car Times as well!

Geely designers have gone all ACME on the front of this car with its massive bug eyed grill and light designs. Perhaps Geely are trying to recreate Cherys success with the iconic QQ, perhaps they will be able to, or perhaps they wont be able to (more than likely the latter)

The engine is likely to be a 3 cylinder model that Geely already has in its portfolio, the motoring press are saying it will be of CVVT stock.

The final comment from the Chinese article was ‘Extremely Chinese, Extremely Cute, Extremely COOL!’ But what do you think?

It makes me think Geely could have done a better job on the front end. Reminds of those cheap electric cars that are hand made here in China - search for Smart on CCT and you’ll find what I mean.

Why is the rear windshield nozzle so low, and pointing upwards?

Wouldnt it be better for it to be at the top, pointing down, closer to the window?

Maybe its back to front-cos it sure looks like the front end is a big opened rectal orifice, or maybe its inside out and its disappeared up its own arse…………. God help China and the rest of the world if anyone with 1/2 a brain thinks this nightmare is Extremely Cute, Extremely COOL!

I completely agree with Dog Tucker

I guess Geely needs to learn from Chery , go and seek help from Italian designers until their own designing skills mature.

Over recent postings I’ve been accused of being anti Chinese car design - but come on. What the hell is going on. This is hideous!!

I’ve had another look at these pictures again, especially from the back end. On rechecking it, it kinda looks as if they’ve tried to copy the Aygo/C1/107 trio from Toyota, Citroen and Peugeot with the tailgate glass and the shape of the back window and doors. So again an ugly design based on a copy of something Japanese/European.

(Comments wont nest below this level)

That front end is butt f%$^$^#g ugly… for once the rear end looks OK… Interesting tail lights.
Now, the big bug catcher could be hiding a huge intercooler…. that or the cheap buggers don’t want to use a radiator.
At least its an original design :)

Ashley I believe the windshield washer nozzle is at the upper left. As for the lower center button, I’m guessing it’s a lock cylinder for the hatch.
Both the rear wiper without a good park position, and the hatch’s external hinges, look very vulnerable to trouble.
As Mememe said it would be better to employ the foreign design houses with this kind of project. In China most of the designers and engineers have not yet had the advantage of car ownership. But I guess we don’t know yet exactly who designed this new Geely minicar.

This is at least the third Chinese manufacturer to show a copy of the Citroen C1/Peugeot 107/Toyota Aygo, although at least Geely has redone the front end. So far, judging from only spy photos here on CCT, the BYD version looks much more convincing than both the Geely and the Lifan.

Is this really a cheaper way to develop cars than to get someone to make an original design?

Geely? maybe change the brand name to god-durn-ugly…I’ve been watching the China Times for a few weeks and boy are there some ugly/scary ideas floating out there..kinda reminds me of the early 60’s when everbody in Detroit told us fins are way-cool. This car is b_tt ugly. And the rear isn’t much better with the carbon tail light knock offs. Sorry guys, Americans wouldn’t even drive by the dealership if the tater bug was sold, no given away here…Crush it (da bug) and start over. better luck next time.

Classic comment on the Geely AOO from Autoblog Italia:

‘Mamma mia! E’ più brutta di un giorno senza pane!
Beh, almeno non è copiata da una qualche altra auto occidentale o giapponese.’

You never can tell what will sell these days, Jim Corty. Why look at the rolling shoe boxes that Scion and Honda are doing so well with. The desire of youth to defy the establishment’s preferences is very strong indeed. Yeah it’s ugly but ugly can spell “Cool” or “Hot”. Whatever..

I showed the pic of the front to a Cantonese girl and she said “looking is ok” so I guess its just us gweilos who think it is bloody ugly…
I’m hoping to go to the GZ show next weekend so I’ll see if it looks better in real life.

I showed to my Chinese wife, who is still laughing from embarressment. All of my Chinese colleagues (who are in the auto industry) have many different thoughts, from 2 who think it looks like a ‘girls front bottom’ to ‘whoever designed and approved the thing must nave been drinking buddies’ Not one even slightly favourable comment. It just gets worse (the hope for the Chinese auto industry that is)

Yes Dragin we never know what will sell till they throw it out there…That’s why I drive a Beijing Jeep with a Ford V8 under the hood…And a Jag…And a 65 Mustang convertible…And a Lancia Zagoto…God I love cars, just not skateboards with 3 cylinders, that need a crucifix on the dash….B good!

Wierd, correct me if I’m wrong, but this looks like another
copy of the Toyota Aygo/Citroën C1/Peugeot 107. I’ll give them
credit for changing the front and partially the back design, but
this is truly “Chinese” indeed(as in, another counterfeit Chinese
car).

Word is thay Geely spent extensive time in their R&D dept developing this. Their R&D dept is the same as most Chinese manufacturers ‘Recieve and Duplicate’.
