China Car Times believes the Roewe SUV is Ssangyong based, possibly from a Ssangyong Rexton based vehicle.

In another life, the Rexton could have been an MG SUV, to rival the likes of the BMW X5, the Porsche Cayenne at the top end of the performance SUV market, at least according to this website. SAIC and MG Rover were originally planning to go into a joint venture agreement, but due to irregularities in MG Rover accounting SAIC pulled out sharpish and picked up the scraps once MG Rover was bankrupt. Plans were clearly afoot for a V8 4.6 monster SUV and a smaller 2.5 V8 offering. It seems Roewe have continued with these plans for the SUV from the below pictures.

Interesting. I can confirm a Ssangyong Rexton with a light Peter Stevens MG makeover was shown to MG Rover dealers in the UK in late 2004, much to the alarm of the MG Moaners Club.

Its fair to say the Moaners with their moaning put a nail in the lid of MGR. That SUV would have kept them going, especially a softroader!

The car looks like the SsangYong Kyron, not like the Rexton. Pics of the Kyron —> http://www.km77.com/00/ssangyong/kyron/g01.asp

I don’t understand why they put camouflage in their cars… They’re clons of others cars!

    @ Castro

I don’t even understand why you even bother to run an auto blog when you don’t even know that most of the spy shots are taken with camouflage.
