A VW Jetta Pick Up Truck?

27 November 2007 19 Comments

Yes, we were confused as well.

Apparently this is used by FAW in their factory grounds for carting stuff around, China Car Times doesnt believe it will ever see mass production, not with the rear passenger doors still attached.

Bring it on, Im within an inch of cracking the million page view per month barrier.

Well, I already sent them the link, so I’m pretty confident they’ll put it up. I actually had an article with some hints on using valet posted on the page. Aah, my 15 minutes of fame.

I read that article, good stuff! Are you a valet?

Im currently scanning Taobao for a cheap Jetta (not hard)

Tomorrow Ill check with an official (or multiple) to see if its legal to throw out the backseats of a Jetta and make it into a truck. I think because its already classed as a civillian vehicle, its class wont be changed into a goods vehicle and thus will be able to enter the city center where goods vehicles are banned from for most of the day.

The US had a VW Rabbit (golf) truck in the early 80’s…
    Here is an example:

MGBman - thats the nearest I could find to a Jetta pick up truck!

I was actually Human Resources and Claims for a valet company. So I was at the top of the food chain :)

Geely once made a pick up truck based off the Mei Ri.

Virtual pat on the back to the first person who finds a picture/article about it.

    Very rare they are!

    Oh yes:

I found on another page that its a 1L engine, top speed 98kph, weight is 998kg and its a 4 speed box. It went on the market in 2004 with a price tag of 20,980rmb!

Is that thing RIPE for a MASSIVE engine conversion, or what?

Oh dear, sounds like somebody has a mild case of Jalopnikitis. ;)

Im now hunting for kei car style pick up trucks :D

  • MGBMAN72 said:

Well, the Jetta started life as a 2 door coupe and 4 door sedan version of the Rabbit (Golf) and that seems little changed today, except for the coupe.
    http://members.tripod.com/~Jetta_GLi/saleslit.txt or http://members.tripod.com/~Jetta_GLi/gli.html
So for a while, we had basically a 2 door, 3 door, 4 door, 5 door and truck Rabbit (Golf/Jetta) to choose from in basic and GTI (hatch)/GLI (trunk) sport trim.

If its based on a Mei Ri is should be front wheel drive so an engine conversion will be a wee bit problematic…
I would recommend a Great Wall pickup with a Lexus V8 instead :)

  • Ashley (author) said:

    Now that is an idea.

Why not a QQ pickup? That would look unique and all the Chinese would like it :)

    Excellent idea!

    Im thinking BJ2020 now :D

The first one i saw was on a diesel website where the guy ahead of me said, “I’ll take 2″ Isn’t it strange to find a german pickup in China when they could be making & selling them like hotcakes here in the States? Where’s the marketeers?
