Last time we talked about the new Jetta, or the Model X as its known on the inside, details were thin on the ground. More pictures, and more information has since come to life.
The above pictures (click to enlarge) show a Jetta catalogue, and then what we believe to be the new Jetta out testing.
Our sources tell us that the Jetta will either use the old Jetta engine, or use the TSI range of engines that VW has recently announced they will put into production in China, the TSI engines could be either a 1.6 or a 2.0 motor. Rumor has it, that the new Jetta is based off the Sagitar model (the Sagitar is the Jetta in the USA, just to confuse things further!). The Sagitar is obviously quite bigger than the current Jetta, which makes China Car Times ask, why are remakes of 70’s and 80’s car so big these days?

What exactly is the point of making a new ‘Jetta’ off the existing Jetta, oops I mean Sagitar? Judging by the looks of the pictures I’d say it’s more likely off the Bora (oh another Jetta!). Would the real Jetta please stand up.
I believe the Sagitar will be more of an upmarket motor in China, where as the Jetta will be the cheaper work horse that will be aimed at all of those taxi companies that are just about to renew all of their cars next year!
I wonder if FAW will continue to make the old old Jetta, when the new Jetta is in production?
From what I can see all iterations of the Jetta are being produced which sees them renaming (and slightly altering the looks) of the Euro spec Vento (Golf Mk3 saloon), Bora (Golf Mk 4 saloon) and Euro Jetta (Golf Mk 5 saloon). But the main question is why? Why do the chinese need 3 different versions of the same type of car with the only differences being teh age of the chassis and engines?
The Jetta is the same in USA, I live in Texas, and I have a Jetta MkV
The Jetta in China is the saloon version of the Mk2 Golf. This has been rehashed slightly over the years. The Bora is the Golf MK4 saloon and was sold as a Bora I think in Europe. The Sagitar is sold as the Jetta in the rest of the world and is the saloon version of the Mk5 Golf. I think maybe all these cars were known as the Jetta in the US but I’m not absolutely sure.
BTW am I right in thinking that the Golf sold in China is actually the Mk4 version and not the latest. Wonder what will happen when the soon to be released Mk6 hits the road!
To quote Towelie (from South Park) - “Oh man…….I have no idea what’s going on”.
What IS up with VW right now? JettaSantanaSagitarGolfBora………What the hell is what? Will the Polo be the new “entry” car for VW? Is the new Jetta going to be above the Polo but below the Sagitar? What about the Golf and Bora? What about the OLD Jetta and Santana? It seems pretty jumbled and not well organized right now…….am I the only one who thinks that? Any others out there agree? Disagree? As confused as I am?
“Oh man…..I have NO idea what’s going on”.
In China Jetta is strictly taxi. Bora is cheaper family car. Sagitar is more expensive family car. Family car is a market segment in China.
Gol is cheapest, then Polo.
Golf is the older Golf.
Oh, and Santana (whatever iteration) is taxi and business car and personal car.
Uh……….the Gol is gone (at least in south China) and the CHEAPEST VW right now is the entry level Jetta…not the Polo. Jettas are NOT strictly taxis….a lot of private ones on the street (my friend has one, as a matter of fact). The NEW Jetta is LARGER than the Polo/Golf….almost the size of the Sagitar. The NEW Santana looks like it could compete with the Passat or Magotan….so my question remains - what segment will these cars fit in? Will they keep the OLD Jetta as a “price point leader” or will the Polo take that title? Will the new Santana be marketed as a economy version of the Passat or Magotan? Lots of questions….I hope VW has some answers soon.
Just checked - the Gol is still in production, priced from 60,880rmb to 70,888rmb. The two door is still in production for 70,380rmb, all models are 1.6l 87bhp 5 speed manuals.
I think my neighbour has one, at least, there is one parked next to my car every morning. Its a 3 door, and it doesnt look too bad. Ill write about the Gol tomorrow. I have heard via Erik that it wasnt very successful.
Gol not successful in China correct.
In South America though they have just built the 5 Millionth version.
On the new Jetta, I’ll wait till its released before commenting.
