China bought 375,000 SUVs last year – Hoo Rah! for cheap gas
The Chinese government group, the National Association of Passenger Manufacturers, released a report yesterday saying that 375,000 SUVs were sold in China, of which the Great Wall Hover, and Chery Tiggo were the best selling models.
Top sellers:
- Great Wall Hover – 55,752 cars sold
- Chery Tiggo – 50,098
- Honda CRV – 45,686
- Hyundai Tuscon – 44,729
- Zotye 2008 – 31,577
The real surprise in that list is, most of the manufacturers are domestic models, and the Zotye, a relatively small player in the Chinese market place has reached sales of 31,577. Good work!

Zotye 2008?
That means that the Zotye upstart has sold more units in under 6 months than Zhongxing did in all of 2006. How will Zhongxing meet American expectations with so little experience in mass producing vehicles?
Note: Zhongxing didn’t even make a blip on the SUV chart, but is slated to hit the big leagues in mid-2008.
Zhongxings 07 line up was dire, however, the Zhongxing 08 stuff is showing massive improvement.
I think the Landmark is over priced though.
