China Car Times Declares: Geely King Kong2, best looking Chinese Hatchback

The Geely King Kong (above) was one of Geelys first better looking small compact sedans, a smaller version of the larger Yuan Jing sedan. Geely have made a smaller, hatchback version of the King Kong, the design was apparently done in house by Geely, and shows that Geely are finally getting on track when it comes to making good looking vehicles.

The Geely King Kong Hatch measures (LxWxH) 3995mm x 1692mm x 1435mm, sporting an unknown engine that is apparently upto Chinese 3 emission standards, and can reach 160kph, Geely has the choice of 1.3, 1.5 and 1.8l engines for its King Kong hatchback however.

Can China Car Times readers agree that this is one of the better looking Chinese hatchbacks? Chinese motoring press believe the car will cost 50,000rmb to 60,000rmb on the road and will go up against the Chery A1, Pug 206, Citroen C2 etc etc in the Chinese market place.

The quote from above: “the design was apparently done in house by Geely, and shows that Geely are finally getting on track when it comes to making good looking vehicles.”. The question is….does it? the front end is old shape Kia and the back is just wrong! Odd lights, odd chrome strip. The side is an od mix of straight angles and curves. Odd indeed!

  4. avatar Mememe says:

Colin G, what is wrong with the back ?

    • avatar Colin G says:

The back looks as if it’s melted in the middle. The lights are at an odd angle (and appear too big). They then meet a huge bit of chrome which is straight which makes it look like it’s melted. There is no style involved in it at all. however as we all know and have argued countless times, style is a personal thing. It reminds me of the Proton Savvy (it’s not chinese but it’s plug ugly around the butt and looks quite like this too!!).

What has happened to cars having style?

man, I really don’t want to sound like a pain in the ass every post I post here, but this car certainly does NOT look good to me…
    .
    actually, I think it’s ugly, I’d never buy it…
what competitors is it aiming at??
    .
it sure does look better than QQs and stuff, but still isn’t enough to be considered “good looking” …
    .
Nissan Tiida / Versa resemblance, anyone…??

    • avatar Ash says:

Yes, but perhaps only in your dreams!

Its much smaller than the Versa to start with… Its aimed at the Chery A1 segment.

    • avatar Colin G says:

You’re not being a pain….the car is ugly. It doesn’t take any more time to design a nice lokoing car as it does to design a mediocre or ugly car. So why don’t the chinese designers design good cars (that’s design not copy!!).

  6. avatar mark says:

I’m sorry but this car is about as ugly as Geely’s other designs. It also seems to have strong resemblances in areas to other cars.

Man……….TOUGH room here. I gotta agree with you Ash…..this is a example of Geely getting their act together. I think it’s pretty decent, and if the interior is pretty much the same as the sedan than even better. If they keep the price between 50-60,000 rmb it will be a hit – you get A LOT more car for the price than the A1. More room for carrying things, more room for passenger comfort, more engine options……just more “car” in general. Maybe this is the beginning of Geely’s “coming out” party – new logo, new in house designs……maybe a new, more agressive attitude? I’ve been wondering if Geely was going to “step it up”…….maybe now they’re starting to do it. I’ll be VERY interested to see this car in person!

Anyone say Toyota Corolla or Opel Astra look-a-like?

  9. avatar Mememe says:

Calling this a Toyota Corolla lookalike a quite ridiculous.
