Beijing lays the slap down on polluting vehicles - foreign and domestic KO’d

Both foreign and domestic vehicle makers, including the very biggest of names such as Suzuki and Roewe have been told to take their pollutin’ vehicles off the streets of Beijing.

The latest round of laws shows Beijing is taking some serious thought to de-polluting Beijing before the 2008 Olympic games, the latest emissions law specifies that any car that not up to Euro 5, or its Chinese equivalent ‘Chinese 5′ emissions standard cannot be sold in Beijing. Previously sold models are not effected by the latest rules.

Vehicles that have been forced to halt sales:

  • Kia Cerato - Euro 3
  • Geely King Kong - Chinese 3
  • Mitsubishi Pajero - Euro 3
  • Mitsubishi Lancer - Euro 3
  • NAC MG7 - Euro 3
  • Roewe 750 - Euro 3
  • BYD F3 - Chinese 3
  • FAW-Haima 3 - Chinese 3
  • Suzuki Liana - Euro 3
  • Suzuki Swift - Euro 3 (1.3l version)
  • Hyundai Accent - Chinese 3
  • Buick Regal - Euro 3
  • Chery QQ3- Chinese 3
  • Chery QQ6 - Chinese 3
  • Chery Oriental Son - Chinese 3
  • Chery Cowin - Chinese 3
  • Chery Tiggo - Chinese 3
  • Chang’an Ben Ben - Chinese 3
  • Mazda 3 - Euro 3

The above vehicles will not allowed to be sold as new after March 1st 2008. This law was not a secret, sudden move by the Beijing government, it has been in planning for the later part of 2007, thus China Car Times is unsure as to why so many famous car manufacturers did not get into gear to rectify the problem! There is still a week or two left until March 1st, perhaps they can do something beforehand.

So that means Chery would have no vehicles to sell in Beijing? Any idea which Chinese own brand cars have met the Chinese 5 standard?

Chery have the A1 and A5 that I believe may be upto Chinese 5 standards for the Beijing area.

A3 will be also Chinese 5, for the Beijing markets only I bet though!

I don’t get the reasoning behind this. Surely these cars are polluting less than some of the factories around china, and you don’t see them being told to shut up shop!!

Its not around China, its in the Beijing area alone. Beijing is a municipality, making it basically on par with a province - they can lay down laws like this no problem. Im not sure as to how many big pollutin’ factories are left in the Beijing area, they’ve really cleaned that town up. The biggest problem with Beijing is that it was built in the flat lands between mountains giving it a bowl effect, all the pollution has no where to go, it just sits above Beijing.

One of them is the old Beijing Auto Works itself. With the ongoing sprawl of the capital, it’s almost downtown now. Recycling the huge amounts of wastewater in an automotive production plant, as Honda and Toyota do so well, is something that I doubt BAW has refitted the old plant to do. Not to speak of the paint solvent vapors that need recovering.
Anyway I’m more concerned that Beijing is just doing all of this banning for the approval of the Olympics crowd, and not for the long term well being of its own people.

@ Collin G

The pollution in Beijing is also largely due to cars on the streets as well.

Beijing has already shut down alot of old factories and power stations

typical chinese desperate-fake-unfair solutions
.
put some make up on Beijing to make it look prettier when it is on the spotlights…
.
it’s like living in a filthy hole, but getting your house all cleaned up and shiny when you have guests home.
.
(before accusations, I don’t mean beijing is a filthy hole, don’t get me wrong..)

I find this interesting as a quick browse of a recent car magazine lists many models as meeting IV standards, but not V.
