MG7 1.8 – Sans Turbo!

MG are getting ready to launch the MG7 1.8, previously the MG7 came as either a 1.8 Turbo assisted motor, or the larger 2.5 V6 model. We did hear rumors that the MG7 1.8T was getting canned as the emissions were too poor, and the Roewe 750 1.8T would take over that alloted 1.8T slot, however, we cannot confirm if this is true.
Now it seems MG plan on launching the MG7 without a turbo as a basic 1.8 model, we are unsure of the pricing, but we could see something around the 150,000rmb marker, which would make the MG7 with its Jag S-type looks an absolute bargain and would certainly raise sales, especially with the new automatic gearboxes that MG are planning on installing.

Now that is going to be a gutless wonder!!
It was a gutless wonder when it was on sale in the UK. I drove the Rover 75 with that engine and it was terrible. Too heavy a and too weak an engine for it. It needed the Turbo.
What’s the latest with the car getting the Turbo Diesel engines?
I shouldn’t think the car will ever be sold with a turbo diesel in China.
I’d agree with that.
china is like the USA, and Diesel just hasnt hit the mainstream yet.
Well, there are some Turbo Diesel SUV’s, but I hope you like queuing up with the big trucks and their 200l fuel tanks to get yourself 50l of diesel! It takes for ever! Especially at highway service stations!
But I thought they were trying to sell this car (and it’s sister Roewe) in Europe where Deisel is over 60% take up for this size of car. Obviously they couldn’t use the old BMW sourced diesel in it, but MG/Rover had their own Diesel (L series I think) that was found in the Rover 24/45 and MG ZR/ZS. Who bought the rights to this engine? Surely that could be tweaked to bring it up to date. Hey presto a ready made range of diesels for Europe.
Or buy the VW 2.0 TDi unit as Chrysler do for Europe.
A lot of Chinese manufacturers still think that they don’t need a diesel to sell in Europe. Having said that Brilliance are working on selling a diesel version in the European market. Whilst both MG and Roewe have made noises about selling in Europe nothing really concrete seems to have emerged yet.
I think that’s the mistake a lot of companies made when selling in Europe. To make any impact at all you need a diesel. The Japanese were slow to accept it and they suffered, although they’ve now addressed this, even Subaru with it’s ‘boxer’ diesel. however, there are plenty of European makers who’d happily sell their diesels to the chinese!!
