Car Ownership up 32% in 2007
Car ownership increased by a massive 32% over 2007, giving a total of 56.97 million cars on the roads of the PRC.
The 32%, which equates to just over 15 million extra cars on the road, is likely to lead to big headaches for local governments who have to expand their road networks, and upgrade existing networks to allow for extra capacity. At the end of 2007, the total number of vehicles on Chinese roads was 56.97 million cars, which equates to:
- 14.68 million three wheeled vehicles
- 35.34 million privately owned vehicles
- The remainder being made up of government, and cars belonging to companies (currently unknown figure)
Vehicle sales are expected to top 10 million vehicles per year by 2010, proving that anticipated world recession is not a worry for Chinese consumers.

What’s the source of these data?
they really need to think about phasing out the 3 wheeled tractors + the soviet big rig trucks. Those things are all tech stemming from the 50s…and they pollute like theres no tomorrow. Some of the smog coming out of the tailpipes from these vehicles are soooo thick it blinds the cars in the rear temporary….and also leaves a thin residue on the windshield
Having really dodgy diesel doesn’t help as well. It’s not just the trucks, in many cities there are still many old public buses that spit out the same stuff.
“they pollute like there’s no tomorrow”
.
That is really quotable. You saw it here first on China Car Times
