Chery Faira – new cars range from Chery! Death of the QQ?
The QQ range of cars brought Chery under the international motoring spotlight, it was clearly the start of things to come, the ‘clone wars‘ were starting! Now it seems that Chery are putting the QQ range behind them, the QQ3 was a success, the QQ6 was quite frankly, one of the worst cars we have ever seen. The new hatchback range from Chery is a mixed lot, some are excellent, others leave us scratching our heads and wondering what its all about.
The latest range really do show that Chery are emerging as a car maker, maturing, and finding niche markets that they can expand into or solve problems for.

Chery has a new secret model, the Faira, or ‘Wu Wa‘ in Chinese. The Faira appears to be the Chinese answer to the Smart car – its a 3 door, 2 seater vehicle that is best suited to inner city travel rather than inter city highway runs.
The Fairer is obviously for only two people, Chery came up with a solution to that problem and made a Faira mini SUV, a ‘soft roader’ with SUV looks. Interestingly, the Faira is named the ‘Faira JJ’ An odd name, seeing as JJ is Chinese slang for penis or a non offensive slang word for a gay person.
The Faira JJ has some interesting looks to it, the side profile is looking a lot like the Suzuki SX4, and the front profile reminds us of the Great Wall Perri
For those consumers that dont like the extra cladding or two seater cars, then Chery have come up with a QQ-esque little saloon:
This little saloon is to be named the Faira HH.
The below Faira hot hatch is something we have been yearning for for quite some time! The Faira YY looks pretty sporty!
Could the Faira range of mini hatchbacks be the death of the iconic QQ range? The QQ range did bring Chery both fame and infamy with the QQ3 – a clone of the Daewoo Matiz. The QQ3 became for China what the VW Beetle and Mini did for their respective countries, the QQ3 was a run away success, it combined low pricing with high end designs and some pretty decent technology! Some higher end QQ’s did come with semi automatic gearboxes and digital dashboards. Engine power for the Faira range is expected to be from the 1.3l range of ATECO engines, and possibly a 1.5l for the sports version!

REALLY interesting pics…….but I have a hard time imagining Chery just “dumping” the QQ name. It’s too well known in the chinese market and Chery has invested a lot already in new designs (QQ6, QQ5, QQ2). MAYBE this new Faira range of mini cars might be a new “brand” for Chery (such as Scion is to Toyota)? Think of GM (Buick, Chevy, Cadillac, Pontiac, Saturn) or Ford with their different “brands” – maybe Chery is thinking about something similar here in China. In any case, some cool designs from Chery/Faira – the YY is especially cool!! Maybe these might be introduced at the Beijing auto show???? Let’s hope so!!

Chery’s naming strategy is something interesting and new (Faira JJ, HH and YY). At least they are trying to be different.
The Chinese slang for penis is “ji-ji”, so ‘JJ’ (“jay-jay”) doesn’t actually rhymes close. I’d think ‘GG’ (“gi-gi”) would be closer.
In the third picture of the YY – What is that bar on top of the rear of the car? It kinda looks like a really small & misplaced part of a roof rack?
Chery officials confirmed that the Faira sporty and roadster ones will enter production in about a year from now
