Brilliance to stick a 1.9 turbo diesel engine into a sedan

bs4 Brilliance to stick a 1.9 turbo diesel engine into a sedanBrilliance has a fair share of interest in the European market, they are determined to make an entry into the heart of Euro land. Last year they did make an entry but it was rather like dive bombing into the swimming pool with an awful crash test rather than a graceful dive. Brilliance went back at the crash test in Spain, and gained a reasonable 3 stars. Many automotive commentators believe that Brilliance really needs a diesel model if they are going to make any head roads into the European executive car market – those guys need a car thats economical and good enough to do a few thousand kilometers on the highways per month! Brilliance listened, and they delivered, a 1.9 Turbo Diesel BS4 and a BS6 are expected to be launched at the Beijing Auto Show later this month. The 1.9 turbo diesel engine is a first from Brilliance, and quite possibly a first from a Chinese auto manufacturer. The turbo is sourced from Bosch, whilst the engine is a home grown 4 cylinder design which meets Euro 3 and Euro 5 emission specifications, which makes it good for sales in both China and Europe.

Executives and family men will also be pleased to learn that Brilliance may well launch the BS4 station wagon at the Beijing Auto Show!

At auto shanghai ´07 Brilliance showed a diesel motor (Code: DK4A ). This diesel engine is producued by Mianyang xinchen engine Co. Ltd., which in turn is jointly invested by Brilliance(47%share). Does anybody know if the announced 1.9 Diesel is derived (with reduced displacement) from the DK4A diesel (4 cylinders, displacement 2.5L) ??

I said the TD engine was a first for China, but is it really? Surely the Great Wall Hover TD came first, what engine does that use – homegrown or off the shelf Harbin produce?

Does Great Wall produce any of their own engines? I thought they largely used Mitsubishi ones.

Baoding Changcheng Internal Combustion Engine Manufacturing Co., Ltd., aka Great Wall… has an annual capacity of more than 100,000 engines.
Up until recently when it developed and produced the INTEC 2.8 L turbo diesel for the Wingle, most of those were of the Toyota designed 4Y and 3Y variety.

If performance is better than their current unleaded 1.8T – I wonder if it’ll make it to their coupe…

  5. The problem is that in Europe this car is over priced for what it is. The interior is seriously backward and 3 stars in an NCAP test is still only 3 stars. To sell this Brilliance need to compete on price. They should check out the competion.
