Beijing 2008: Geely GT – makes Jag XF look old hat
No doubt those that will read this article and link to it will make the usual Chinese car jokes “Will it come with lead paint?” “Will it fold up like a Cola can in a crash?” but just for a moment take in the lines of Geely GT. Note the lack of a Geely badge, which may hint at a potential upmarket brand from Geely, the way that the big Japanese brands made separate brands (Infiniti, Lexus, etc) back in the 90′s.
This GT alone, should go some way in persuading the naysayers that believe Geely is not ‘serious‘ about making cars. The cars that they’ve shown off at the 2008 Beijing Auto Show are by far their best yet. For more on the Geely GT check out our previous article on the Geely GT

Its only a matter of time before Geely becomes into something similar to Hyundai..they are on the right track…

Ok IHC.
This is probably the first time I PARTIALLY agree with you but on the other hand I can pull off some example of multi-billions company that is still struggle to make decent products and compete globally. Sorry I know I know I am not supposed to drag the third party in but I am using it as an example (Ash if you think it’s not appropriate then delete it please).
Tata motors is part of the conglomerate Tata group there, a multi-billions group being established for more than 60 years and yet still struggle to compete on global arena and still struggling to sell off some units in African countries notably South Africa, if i am not wrong last year it only exported a modest of about 50k units. And its latest breakthrough is the world’s cheapest car. Now that does not look like a money fight to me.
> Mememe
Tata is a bad example since Tata wasn’t serious about making an assault on passenger car market until now.
Once Tata got serious about the passenger car market, you see them buying up Jaguar/Land Rover and doing Nano, which is only possible if you have lots of cash which Tata does.
Yes, Chinese car makers don’t have the big bucks and the only way to showcase their potential is by copying someone else’s design which reduces the development cost considerably..and when you see a QQ3, you would describe it to another person as- “looks exactly like the Matiz or Spark”..which gives the other person an idea that it would look very cool and nice…i believe that the only way to build brand image is by offering cars similar to the world-famous ones and then after a point, start making your own ones..and lets not forget that China is in the top 3 of the largest automotive markets in the world..I have never heard (correct me if i’m wrong) of Honda tying up with a local brand to make cars for that particular market…shows the potential and opportunities that lie ahead for China and other international brands..

Tata became world-famous instantly with Nano. And everyone praised Tata for being so original and inventive, in spite of Nano being the cheapest car in the world.
> and lets not forget that China is in the top 3 of the largest automotive markets in the world.
There are too many global giants doing business in China for China’s own brands to grow. Basically, Chinese communist party made the mistake of openning up the Chinese market before Chinese brands were ready to compete with global giants. This wasn’t the case with Japan and Korea, where their respective governments opened up their market only after their local brands became world players and could compete head to head with foreigh brands.

Chinese government requires foreign companies to come up with Chinese-sounding brand to mask their foreignness.
I don’t know if i should agree or disagree with you here.
anyway just a little update here: China’s now the second largest market but third largest producer.
Geely vice president Frank Zhao said the GT will head into production within the next 18 months, can someone confirm this ?
Nice looking car. If it goes into production then the only thing limiting it will be a decent engine. In China that won’t matter so much but outside the mainland it could.
i don’t know nothing about chinese cars. i was watching the closing ceremony of the olympic games and decide to go “virtualy” deeper and “discover” china. and i found this site. and on top of that this car.
i’ll buy it anydayyyyyyyyy I REPEAT ANYDAY!!!!!!!!!
come this is MORE THAN GOOD LOOKING CAR!!!!!
once again after this olympic games i am not surprise anymore of THE GREAT CHNA!!!!
@ Anthony, You do realize that Geely is a CHINESE brand, and it serves the CHINESE people, and not to mention that China is currently the largest auto market in the world. So wake up, the west is not everything.
UGLY CAR…..
Ssanyong Chairman? You mean Mercedes S-class! The chairman is nothing but an exercise in badging. Hell it looks the same as the W128 S-class. But uglified.
.
Ssangyong wouldn’t have the resources to build something of that calibre. Not to mention Ssangyong is 51% owned by SAIC, do you really think that SAIC would let Geely use their platform?
Sketchy at best. Thirdeye links the Geely GT to its forums and posts some of the renders CCT posted up a few weeks ago.
.
Geely is not listed on their list of clients despite their use of Geely photos.
.
But regardless, it’s always good for international collaboration. This blatant racist should be glad the Chinese companies have enough money to throw around at his compatriots. Not sure why I bother to feed the troll.
.
BTW, please go tell the gentlemen below that a Korean “copied” the Competizione 8C. And go reply all the people on autoblog that are blaming the Chinese for ‘copying’ the 350Z rear end and some obscure supercar’s grille.
Also, the gallery where Thirdeye posts the Geely GT, they also show the Audi R8, and VW Tiguan. Either the webmaster is inept for mixing his employer’s designs with competitors, or it’s merely a fan posting.
Of course the Ssangyong Chairman is $100k+; they have to somehow payback Mercedes for the use of the W128 S-class chassis.
.
Anyways, it’s awesome that the Geely GT uses the same W128 chassis, I don’t mind having proper German underpinnings. I’d take a Merc-designed chassis over any Asian-marque anyday. The W128 was probably the last of the old-fashioned Benz.
Did you even look at the pictures of other girls and you call that girl the hottest in the crowd ? I just hope that girl did not get plastic surgery.
