The Hong Qi CA7220a9e12L was quite possibly the most awesome Audi derritive that FAW made for their sub luxury brand, Hong Qi. Boasting a 2.2l V6 engine pumping out 76kw at 5500rpm and 175nm of torque, the CA7220a9e12L was quite a beast! Make sure you click the below image to fully appreciate the class that is the CA7220a9e12L.
To quote one man: ‘I just physically GASPED at the awesomeness of that 100 convertible!‘ China Car Times has never actually seen a CA7220a9e12L out on the road, but we have seen a pick up version of the Audi 100. China Car Times has made it a personal life goal to see (and maybe drive) the beastly sounding CA7220a9e12L before he dies.
What are your thoughts on the CA7220a9e12L? Surely it is the best example of Chinese motor engineering known to man?

If only Lady Spencer had one of these cruising through Paris. Catchy name too..
I just love your site, I love the tongue in cheek mickey taking of things. You best hope the opinion police don’t start reading between the lines!!
Do you think this was for some leader to wave to the masses? Look at that rail. OK it’s probably a roll bar but it could be a la the pope mobile.
Yes, I think you maybe on to something. It could be a DictatorMobile.
I want one, I want one badly. Found one for sale in Yunnan for 65,000rmb.
Did it really ever exist ? Cause the car is shown in different sizes on those pictures, look at the various length between front and back doors on these various images. Ok it may have existed in various wheelbases but when it comes to that picture on which the convertible is covered, it is so Photoshoped !!! Look at the fake shape of windows and especially at the way the fabric roof just doesn’t fit the top of the windows !!! Either very fake or very very very badly manufactured !
Hi Ash,
As longtime lurker I’m in Yunnan - living in Kunming. Send me some details where you found the car for sale here and I will have a look with report & pictures if possible.
Andre,
On second viewing, the ad is from a year ago!

Excuse me for not “gasping”, but if a 20-year-old Audi 100 convertible is “the best example of China motor engineering”, your “motor engineering” must not be very good. You could probably pick one of those up for under $5000 at an American used car lot. The world has moved on since the 1980s, and you’d better get better “motor engineering” than this if you want to sell cars anywhere outside China.
And no, no thinking man would ever buy this instead of a real Audi.

And no, no thinking man would ever buy this instead of a real Audi. Also, the Roewe 750 isn’t impressive either. You just stuck a new badge on the British Rover 75, which was considered just about the worst luxury car in the world at the time of its discontinuation. If you think it’s a serious competitor to the Lexus GS, BMW 5 series, or even the Cadillac CTS, you have another thing coming.
Executor,
The Audi 100 convertable is long out of production, and was made in limited numbers.
Also, The Roewe 750 is more of a competitor to the Camry and Accord.
Please do not be so angry.
