The second hand car market is exactly what it sounds like. Its a big empty car lot, people that want to sell their cars drive them to the market, and leave their motor their with a card in the window saying how many KM’s it has on the clock, the general state of the car, and possibly how much they want for the car, they also leave a contact phone number. If you like the car, then you give them a call, and they will arrange a time for a test drive. Pretty easy way to sell your car, providing you have a second car to drive in, whilst your other car sits in the lot. China Car Times likes to visit the 2nd hand car mart every now and again, just to see what automotive tat can be purchased. This time, our trip to the market was a bit of a waste of time!
With Qingdao hosting the Olympics later this year, many of the taxis have been replaced with newer models (of the same car!) The old taxis are technically scrap - they’ve done their 8 years of service as taxi cabs, clocked around 2 million km’s on the road, and are in varying different states of disrepair. These cars cannot be sold, they are scrap cars, but this does not stop some people with rather low XXX from selling them. The Santanas/Jettas are priced from 2,000rmb to 15,000rmb.
One car that caught our attention was this lovely Etsong made Maestro. Etsong bought the rights to the blueprints and the tooling from the British company, Rover. The Maestro was known as the Austin Maestro in Britain (and I dare say Europe, too). It seems that Etsong must have bought themselves a few containers full of spare Maestro parts when they bought the technical rights/tooling to the Maestro. Check out the front grill

Its a circular Etsong badge, stuck over a rectangular hole where the very rectangular Austin badge would have sat.
The 2nd hand car market had plenty of Ex-Govt issue black Audi sedans, ranging from the Audi 100/Red Flag combo to newer A6’s. All of which were totally overpriced.
This Nissan Patrol (?) Looked like it had seen better days:
This short wheel base Pajero was up for sale, except they wanted 100k for it, only 15k less than a new one. Bit rich for an 03 model!
There wasnt very much on offer this time at the car market, there was a 911 growling around the lot, but we’re not sure if that was for sale or not! Perhaps next time, it will be better!

Like the way they don’t even bother to clean the cars!
From now there is lots of money waiting to be made in China’s used, or shall we say, “pre-owned” car market.
Yes, I believe there is Dragin, but 2nd hand car prices need to fall a long way!
I think that buying a second hand car is better than buying a new car because the used cars are much cheaper than the new ones, but still are very qualitative.
Yes, I think you’re right, but that would be the case of well maintained cars, and as I could see in the pics, this is no the case.
Here in Chile, the second hand market is as important as are the new cars’. In Fact, for each new going to the streets, 3 used are sold.
Here is a website dedicated to offer 2nd hand vehicles in Chile:

I wouldn’t touch a second hand car in the Chinese market. As Ash has said they are usually grossly over priced. Then there is the probablility that they have been badly driven, poorly maintained, and repaired using dodgy parts in dingy back street garages. Plus it’ll probably stink of smoke.
The auto maintenance market is just starting in China. Quality parts & a good maintenance history will help with resell values.

@Ash: Is there some sort of Chinese equivalent to the “Kelly Blue Book” (general used car pricing guidelines) available to gauge car prices or is this sort of market too immature now?
Too immature! The general rule is 10k RMB off the base price for each year!
I wanted a ‘94 XJ, but the guy wanted 190k for it!
Hi Ash,
“The general rule is 10k RMB off the base price for each year!”How do you know this ?

That “Nissan Patrol” looks so Hyundai Terracanish…
I didn’t know that both manufacturers had some type of relation (joint venture, licences, etc), because the have it, right??!

The VW modders over here obsessing over the now obsolete VW MK2s would probably salivate at the sight of all these ancient VWs and the possible treasure trove of repair parts!
