Li Shu Fu: Making the best car in the world

The below interview of Li Shu Fu, the CEO of Geely, was interviewed by Sina Auto Channel. The translation was carried out by CCT.

Geely Wants To Make the Best Car In The World

Sina: The automobile environment has changed drastically, the competition is getting stronger and strong, what will Geelys next step be?

Li Shu Fu (LSF):  Now we need to rely on our technology. With regards to world automotive technology levels, they have over 100 years of development, experience, direction, and scope. We need to follow this development plan and make breakthroughs in the area of safety, environmental aspects, economy area etc. If we make breakthroughs in these areas we will never look back. We need to be the leader in all areas, we need to have the most environmentally friendly car, the most economical, and the safest car, this is what we are persueing.

Why did you develop BMBS? (China’s Geely Blow-Out Monitoring & Braking System)

LSF: We developed a world class BMBS system, its when you’re driving at speed and suddenly your tyre blows out we’ve put a safety barrier in there. The worlds automotive companies have been looking for a solution to blow outs for a long time, in over a years nobody was able to solve this problem. We believe that its impossible for tyres not to explode, tryres exploded and then fix themselves is not science. No matter if you drive fast, 180kph, or 200kph, our research was based around keeping the car stable so as to avoid crashes and incidents.

Sina: What is the concept behind ‘Electronic Balancing’? Why does Geely believe this is important technology?

LSF: Our electronic balancing is similar to super hybrid power, this is a superior technology. From next year, our Yuan Jing model will perhaps use this new technology. We plan to use this new technology in Beijing, no matter how steep the road is, the car will use around 3l of fuel per 100km of travel. This technology takes the energy from burning fuel, and turns it into stored electrical energy, which can then be used to propel the car, this car has zero waste.

Sina: Geely has factories in many Chinese cities what factors come into choosing a factory location, and what is your global stratergy?

LSF: In the Eastern part of China, we have factories in Shanghai, Hangzhou, Ningbo, Lu Qiao, and in Jinan (Shandong province) we have bought a piece of land for a future factory. In central China we have built a large factory in Hunan province, thats big enough to produce 100,000 cars. In the future, our midrange cars will be produced there, or Hunan and Ningbo factories will both produce mid range cars, our Jinan factory will mid range high class cars, these will be 2.4l and above, and will measure 4.8m and up. This car will be a luxury car, and will be totally self developed to fight against the Honda Accord, and the Toyota Camry.

In 2006, Geely built a factory in Malaysia to assemble CKD kits for the local market. Later, the Malaysian government changed their policies as they believed Geely would affect their local brands, such as Proton and Lotus. We moved that factory to Indonesia.  In Ukraine, we also have a CKD operation where we build the freedom vessel, and the King Kong model. In North America, we have plans for an operation in Mexico, we have a large scope for North America, we plan to sell 300,000 cars in that continent.

Sina: We havent heard much about your partnership with Manganese Bronze, what is happening there?

LSF: We are the largest share holder in a joint venture with Manganese Bronze to produce the London taxi in China. The JV is between Shanghai Maple, and Manganese Bronze. Our taxis have already been delivered for Olympic use in Beijing, we signed over 30 cars to aid in helping disabled guests move about the capital. The most iconic taxi in the world is being used in Beijing, and furthermore, its a Geely product.

Li Shufu was singing a different song last April at an international forum of Chinese auto exectives when he insisted that the rules of the automotive game in China were not fair to the China’s new little tigers, and that, “China should have its own rules in auto manufacturing. The government needs to work on establishing China’s own standards.” It’s laudable to see Geely developing its own technology but Geely can’t survive in a Chinese bubble. It’s got to embrace the big world out there and play according to its rules (standards).

Geely is moving fast..with many new models. They have an opportunity in the US to be one of the Super Powers amongst the Chinese brands coming to market.

They appointed in the US a few years ago a pretty weak distributor in Arizona…this will not help their distribution efforts…they could do much better in the US than this Regional player.

If they get to market by late 09 or early 2010 they could benefit by a first mover factor as well.

It sounds more like something you’d receive in an Amsterdam red-light district for a small fee, to me…….

So, where have i seen similar efforts: Audi (took them 30 years), Lexus (took them a long long time too), Infinity (still not there yet, Rolls Royce (definitely there), Bentley (Very very close). My guess is that Geely must first try to surpass Dodge (easy), Hyundai & Kia (getting harder), Peugeot & Citroën (very easy), Opel (tough), Saab(pour in lots of character please), Audi, BMW and Mercedes. I don’t see that happen for the next 10 years.
Good luck anyway.

The name “Geely” just doesn’t roll off the tongue, either, it reminds me of one of the worst movies ever (gigli?)…which pretty much eliminates the possibility of ever, ever driving one.

What about Toyota, Subaru, Honda etc they all have Japanese meanings, but were eventually accepted by the main stream in the West.

Dear Coleagues,

Well, concerning the fact that the name Geely is not so easy to have pronounced on the tip of the tong, same happens, for example with Chrysler, Daihatsu and many other names we well know on automotive market.

So, personally I believe that in the Today’s World everything can be sold if the marketing and selling strategies are well developed.

Concerning the development of new products, in Brazil there is a huge discussion concerning the know-how to develop Flex-fuel vehicles (which can use gasoline or alcohol in any percentage of mixture) and that the Chinese never will be able to enter this market due to the lack of know how. It is just so a stupid affirmation, because the kit is for sell in the market, just the matter to know who are the suppliers.

What Chinese Car Makers must know and everyone which deal on any kind of business that “know how” is just a commodity. Bear in mind that today you can hire good engineers and/or executives in the market, is just the matter to pay what they are willing to earn.

Therefore belongs to the Chinese Car Makers exclusively to decide in what position they will be in 10 years time.

In that way worked Hyundai which todays owns Kia, they have seen far away the possibilities and changes that the Global Market went trough and today both companies are placed in the 5th. position as the worlwide biggest car producer.

LSF said about their Electronic Balancing:
“This technology takes the energy from burning fuel, and turns it into stored electrical energy, which can then be used to propel the car, this car has zero waste.”
How can you have zero waste with a car that burns fuel? I can see REDUCED waste with electrical assist of a fuel burning engine, but no zero. Am I missing something here?

Yes, David. Zero waste implies zero exhaust emissions or 100% efficiency. Please elaborate for us Mr. Lee…… Being that the IPR (copying) issue has been beaten to death by the foreign media, I am surprised that more have not picked up on this new home-grown technology, which has been rather scarce until now.
