BYD F0 (nee F1) hits the market – priced 30,690rmb to 40,690rmb

f0 BYD F0 (nee F1) hits the market priced 30,690rmb to 40,690rmbThe BYD F0 has hit the market at last, and with a price tag not far from the once rumoured 20,000rmb starting point.

The F0 was renamed earlier this year due to potential licensing issues by using the F1 name, although using a Toyota Aygo inspired design appears not to have been a major issue. BYD are reportedly making less than 1000rmb on each car, making it one of the cheapest small cars on the Chinese market, although the small amount of profit may make the F0 pricing susceptible to increases in raw material costs over the coming years. BYD are reportedly producing several different versions of the F0, which will include Practical, Standard, Luxury, and VIP models, which will be split over the price brackets of 30,690rmb, 30,990rmb, 40,390rmb, and 40,690rmb.

BYD claim that the F0 has no competitors in the AOO car segment, and claim to be aiming for total sales across the BYD range of around 8000 cars per month, or 30,000 cars for this year alone. By 2010, BYD hope to be selling 80,000 cars per year.

A copy of Toyota aygo/Citroen c1/Peugeot 107 and the name F1= formula 1 , Chinese car firms need to come up with these own designs. and stop steeling idears from Europe , Japan and South Korea !

  2. avatar Andi says:

Ha Ha Ha. Like Japan and Korea don’t steel ideas?!

Autoblog is reporting that BYD is only expecting 1,000 yaun profit for each unit. Of course, what happens if Toyota, Citroen or Peugeot decide to market their original version in China?

  5. avatar Iron Rooster says:

Hey Ash, Erik was right about the pricing, bydauto.com agrees with what Erik stated.

If they copied the design of the Toyota Aygo car (and of course is very clear they did it!!!), another very different thing is if they have copied the engine.

The Aygo/Citroen C1/Peugeot 107 are built and the same factory and shares the same engine, a 1.0l 3 cylinder with VVT technology (which cames from Toyota). This machine has won several prizes around the world, about safety, power, economy, and environmental care.

I SERIOUSLY DOUBT that BYD could be able to afford the excellent level of that engine. This is just a bad copy of a great, great car and a great engine.

First time I saw the F0 on the road was in Changchun early September 08. I was hit because I had seen the Aygo, C1, 107 three years earlier at the Frankfurt Motorshow when they were launched to the EU market. Indeed, even the paint colors, the engines, the transmission were stolen. Okay, that’s China, but what’s worse is that BYD (the manufacturer from Shenzhen/South China) boasts that they were so fucking smart and managed to keep the developement costs (!) so low that they can sell the F0 to the Chinese people so cheap. BYD spokespeole didn’t bother at all to declare it their own proud developement achievement. You can see it in China on the BYD ads everywhere. It’s just disgusting.

I have been watching this little car since I saw it on the road in Suzhou last year. One or two have been tarted up for auto shows in China. With rally seats and steering wheel, wide alloys and tires it’s a very appealing little car. Several of my expat friends are also taken with it. I can just see myself doing a very brisk commute to my office 10km away in a BRG version with yellow racing stripes.

Quality is unknown of course but here the cachet of buying from a company part owned by Warren Buffet is substantial. One rumor suggests they might not stay fault free after one year of ownership. But at RMB40K the depreciation is not going to be a big factor!
