Fiat China News – Guangzhou pick up Alfa Platform

Guangzhou Auto appears to be building quite the impressive portfolio of platforms on which to build its own brand of cars, according to Chinese bloggers, Guangzhou recently acquired the current Toyota Camry platform, and has now also acquired the Alfa Romeo 166 platform. The Alfa 166 was a 4 door executive car that was equipped with 2.0l to 3.2l V6 engines, the Toyota Camry is also capable of carrying engines of similar sizes, so why would Guangzhou Auto buy two similar platforms?Chery say that their Fiat-Chery JV is still on going, but the two companies ‘rythem’ is currently different, Fiat China spokesman, Paolo Arpellino, says that the Fiat-Guangzhou partnership will not effect the Fiat-Chery JV.

I doubt Toyota would permit the export of Camry based model(China-only licensing, Toyota is usually very strict about this), whereas Fiat doesn’t mind since 166 is discontinued, as long as they get paid.
