BYD Dual Mode Hybrid to be on the market before 09!

14 October 2008 6 Comments

bydf3dm.jpgThe BYD Dual Mode F3, otherwise known as the F3DM is set to go on the market before the end of the year according to BYD.

The BYD F3DM has already undergone extensive testing, and will be ready for the market quite soon. The batteries that power the F3 DM are BYD’s own design, and use iron rather than lithium, BYD say these batteries are good for 600,000km worth of travel before they need to be changed, or around a 10 year life span. The electrical motor is capable of traveling 100km on electric power provided by the battery, when the car is out of juice, a small gasoline engine kicks in, the engine also aids the electric motor when travelling up steep hills or on highways. BYD also claim their car can be recharged by 50% within 10 , and by using a home electrical outlet, the BYD F3DM can be fully recharged within 7 hours.

Applause for BYD. They may well become China’s environmental hero.
And if they can produce a battery with that kind of extended wear life, they can attract not only lots of car buyers, but E-technology-poor auto manufacturers as well.

GREAT news…………….I am REALLY looking forward to seeing this car soon! Now, if only BYD can do a DM version of the F0……talk about GREAT fuel economy and a car that would be VERY friendly for the environment. I still applaud the debut of the F3DM……….congrats to BYD!

Iron-based battery? I am not sure if this is the right time to introduce lower-energy Iron battery, because GM, Japanese and Korean automakers are converting to lithium batteries by 2010. While BYD’s solution might be cheaper, lithium has the scale of economy and prices would drop quickly in a couple of years. I don’t understand why BYD, so-called the world’s biggest battery maker, decided to go with Iron battery.

They are using lithium iron phosphate rather than lithium ion. Each material has its merit lithium phosphate seems to be more practical. Even A123 is touting its phosphate technology.

BYD says that all their car models will come in dual mode. Since F0 is one of their cars so we wait with bated breath for F0DM
