Cherys dictator wagon in more details

chery-eastar-5-door-thing.jpgSomehow we managed to avoid posting these pictures of Cherys 5 door convertible from the Guangzhou Auto Show last month! 5 door convertibles are special for a few reasons, the most important reason is strength. When you take the roof off a car, you lose one of the strongest pieces of the car, and also the piece that protects you the most in a crash, especially a crash where your car is flipped over; You dont want to have your head ground into the floor.

5 door convertibles are also extremely popular with dictators, what better way to greet your people than by standing in the back, holding onto the rail and waving (whilst giving a totally non convincing smile) to your adoring fans and humble subjects? Convertibles are also very popular with people who dont like presidents, or dictators, essentially we mean snipers.

We posted images of the Chery Eastar 5 door convertible a while back, but we never actually followed up with any engine specifications. We still dont have any engine specifications for the Eastar drop top, but would imagine it would be a big engine to move all of that folding roof, and presumebly added reinforced doors and body.

The only car to actually rival it in China would the FAW Hong Qi Convertible, or as we prefer, ‘The thinking mans Audi

Amazing looking car but can someone please tell me where the 5 doors are? I can see 2 on one side and 2 on the other.

The 5th door is the one in the floor so they can escape through the sewers like in the movies. ;-)

Maybe the engine specs are the magnificent (ah choo) mitsi engines that power everything else about the same size.

Looks as though its already lost its structure – look at the left rear door fit!

yep
.
that’s exactly what I was thinking…
.
indeed, the worst problem about chopping off the roof of a car isn’t really the absence of the roof when your car flips over… this problem is supposed to be solved with safety roll arches.
.
the main problem is structural rigidity, period!
.
I bet this car twists like nothing else

These style of cars are great, truly a product of a by-gone era. Glad to see Chery bringing them back!

A car is a five door when the trunk door or hatch is included!

Hmmmmmm

Yes, I do know how to count to 5 and to include a rear hatch if there is one but there definitely isnt a rear hatch on this beast. Surely this is a 4 door convertible????

Look, there is a trunk, but it should be called a 4 door.

The 5th door is created from the combined stretch marks and body gaps around the original 4 doors.
