Roewe 350 – Is it a Streetwise by another name?

9 December 2008 9 Comments

roewe350-rough-drawings.jpgThese pictures were ‘leaked’ to the Chinese press yesterday, supposedly of a future Roewe 350 super mini, which happens to look just like the Nanjing MG3 SW (streetwise).

Forgive us for sounding cynical, but reports do say that the above drawings were leaked from SAIC, but our childhood classroom doodles looked more like a real car than these do. The drawings arent totally clear if the car will be an MG3 SW esque crossover, or a small compact SUV like the Nissan Qashqai.

SAIC did actually purchase the rights to the Rover 25 (on which the MG Streetwise is based) from Rover along with the Rover 75, although they have not yet put their own Rover 25 model into production. Since buying NAC MG, SAIC have actually acquired the MG3 plant anyway, thus rendering their own Roewe Streetwise model obsolete, or maybe not?

If Roewe need any help with their designs, we’ve got an attic full of text books ranging from our elementary through to university school days, each of which carry a vast array of designs, including some very iffy suspension designs! Shall we open the bidding at 10rmb?

Let’s hope this is not true and the Rover 25 is consigned to the history books after the MG3 SW.

Doesnt the 25 have some maestro parts in it, such as the live axel, and probably countless other bits that make the car much older than it really is?

Hi
No not true
It was a completely new and last (Rover 75 had BMW input)Rover designed vehicle. No part’s shared with Maestro.

having broken up the old austins (montego amd maestro) and then the last 200 and 25 they are much better. The 200/25 platform could have been mega developed into a scenic style mpv but as always with Rover there was never the money to do it.

Interestingly the MGF on closer inspection has parts from Rover 100, rover 200 (old Honda shape) and rover 400 (old shape).

The subframes are from Rover 100 infact they are both front sub frames hence the gearbox has to be linked by wire to the gear lever. This is because it was the only way to couple it properly.

Rover engineers were very clever on a tiny budget. Shame the management were so bad and managed to nestegg their own departure while workers lost their jobs with virtually nothing.

Dear Colleagues,

Believe that this is a drawing that someone did on basis of the next generation of the Crossover Ssangyong Action.

In this case, would be more and less clear that the partnership with both companies is getting bigger and bigger!

By the other hand, we have to bear in mind that some releases are giving by “sources from the automotive industry” as test and this is, apparently a test to feel the oppinion of the market.

Regards to All of You,

I was wondering if this car is actually someones very rough design for this:

I don’t see any MG-Rover influence in this design, but a lot of Ssangyong influence.
The glasshouse shown, with a separate quarterlight behind the rear doors and a pronounced rise towards the rear, is completely different from that of the Rover R3 200/25/Streetwise/MG3.

Dear Ash,

I know the model from the picture you attached this is the MG 25, which was very nice when it was still modern.

Just to add more information I will tell you that this style started strongly in Brazil when FIAT introduced the PALIO WEEKEND ADVENTURE in 1998, today all brands in Brazil have a product like that, which many people use to give the nick name as a “CAT WITH BOOTS” or in resume a normal Car wearing War Clothes, normaly nothing changes in the suspension (they just lift a little up) just the tires, wheels, bumpers and the addition of some acsesories.

By the way I am visiting every day the China Car Times! Congratulations!

Best regards,

J.I.Hosang
