The Chinese Drifters

Drifting, or Piao Yi (Floating Movement?) has become very popular in China in recent years. Movies such as Fast and Furious and the Initial D movie staring Chinese favorite Jay Zhou have only fueled the Piao Yi scene. Since these movies came out, young Chinese guys have been drifting anything they can, we’ve even seen videos of a guy drifting a kei flatbed truck, although in the trucks defense it is RWD. Then there are these two young men from Zhejiang who enjoy drifting their Buick Excelle’s.

Warning: video ID not specified!

These Exelle’s in the above video are front wheel drive only, and are a long way from being the RWD power houses shown in the likes of Need for Speed. Their drifting seems to be reasonable to an untrained eye like CCT’s, are they just pulling the handbreak and using torque steer to make themselves drift? CCT was never a true boyracer.

Thanks to the great China Smack for translating the story.

Wow that’s terrible. Not only is it FWD “drifting” they’re not even good at it…or driving.

I think one of the biggest problems in China is how many new drivers there are who are terrible at driving =(

BTW this is what FF drifting should look like:

Still doesn’t look as cool as regular RWD drifting, but at least it’s not just pulling the e-brake and throwing the rear out lol.

Those tyres they’re running must be bald and hard as porcelain. If you can slide a car sideways at the speed they were going then there’s something actually wrong with the car!

The scary thing is you’ll have a bunch of fanboys thinking that it’s cool to drive gripless cars like that.

Also did I miss the Need For Speed movie? (NFS the game regularly has FWD or AWD cars that ‘drift’, that’s right I forgot they’re all modded somehow :P )

They are missing the tabletops on the boot, tacky copies of HSK and GREEDY decal and another important element of drifting………. LOT OF SMOKE ;)

Where did they manage to find such deserted streets in China and also not cause an accident? It seems also to be something that was done by a whole production team.

Reminds me of North America circa year 2000 when Fast & Furious came out.
