The Friday Question: A compact sedan for my wife!
Good day all – My wife wants a new compact sedan, it must be a compact sedan, no hatches, no compact MPV’s, it must be a sedan. We’ve drawn up a list which we’ll take a look at tomorrow:
- Honda Civic – 1.8l
- Nissan Sylphy
- Ford Focus 2.0
- Roewe 550 1.8T (or MG6 should it come out before July)
- Mitsubishi Lancer (imported, or wait for the domestically produced one)
- Dodge Avenger (I’ve had a hankering for an American car for many years – dont ask why, but this one is imported and rather pricey at 180,000rmb)
- Honda City (new model – 1.8l)
On the sidelines is the Mazda 6 sports sedan, its a little bigger than the compacts listed above but its recent price cuts ahead of the new model arriving has made it quite attractive, but the steering is rather heavy for a small Chinese girl to drive, oddly she doesnt want a car from the likes of Chery, or BYD, despite me pointing out the economical benefits of buying a BYD F3DM.
I may, or may not drive this car on a regular basis, but we would both like something that has decent safety standards, and If Ill be driving it, I’d like it to have a bit of grunt.
Suggestions please!

Really? I think the Sagitar Champion looks slicker than the Civic, but I guess that’s opinion. I am looking into getting one of them. The other option is the Mazda 6 Riu Yi. Are you planning to do a review on the new Mazda 6 Riu Yi? I heard that pricing is coming out on April 12th, and the car will be released at the end of April. Do you have any idea what estimated pricing would be?
I’ve never driven the Sagitar but I have ridden in one. I’ll just say that it looks better than it rides, which actually isn’t saying much.
I remember seeing pricing for the new Mazda6 in one of the domestic car magazines – if I remember correctly, pricing will start in the low 200′s.
Is the Sagitar Champion the one with the sports styling? I admit I quite like it, but the VW interiors here are rather lacking in style, they remind me of a British Primary School; stuffy, institutionalized, rigid, and ultimately prim and proper.
I suffer from narcolepsy when in the vacinity of a VW Dealership.
I do like 15 year old Jetta GT’s though.

Class. I’d love to cut one up and turn it into a Jet-camino truck.
Yeah – the Sagitar Champion is the one with the sports styling I think. It’s got a 1.8L TSI (supercharged and turbocharged engine) with a direct shift gearbox. I’m not entirely sure what all that means but I think it’s pretty sport. It’s got 17″ rims, leather seats, some aluminum lining inside, leather steering wheel, it only comes in black (a good thing I think), and some other stuff I can’t remember. I think it is 160hp. You’re right, the interior is a bit lacking overall – but if you throw in the Siemens GPS system that they have in the Magotan (for rmb 15,000), which has pinyin capabilities, I think that may change the look of the interior. They are selling for 180k (including the 10k discount they offered at the dealership) before taxes and all.
Sorry its not supercharged, just turbocharged (in other countries the TSI engine is super and turbo, giving the 1.4 tsi 17-hp)
170*
