Harley Davidson gets Hog sales rolling in China
Its an odd concept for most Chinese people, why do people want to buy a motorbike, especially an American made motorbike that costs many times more than a Chinese made motorcycle. China is a nation that’s just getting into their automobile, so why do people want to return to the motorbike? Well the simple answer is for the lifestyle. Harley Davidson appears to have made itself a nice little niche market in the PRC, evidence can be found on the Harley section in the Xcar.com.cn forums. A thriving community has quickly been set up to cater to Chinese hog fans, and weekend meets are happening often.
Harley currently has 4 dealerships in China, in Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong and is expected to increase the number of dealers as demand and interested increases in the brand.

Theres a shop in Guangzhou that sells authentic Harley parts, no bikes though because they are banned there. Nice little shop.

there’s a dealership in Qingdao, yet they are banned there as well. i guess if you can afford to buy one however, the police ain’t gonna stop you
They’ll stop you. You need to get a plate and license, which is possible only with certain size motorcycles and usually requires you to only drive in certain districts. If you’re plated, licensed, and just ‘in the wrong district’, usually they wont do much though.
Harley is not everywhere banned.
One can legally buy in the dealerships and get a legal registration in various cities.
Motorbikes are not allowed in most city centers and not allowed to drive on highways.
But as said, it’s a nish market…my Harley is acc. to local police station the 3rd motorbike with more than 400cc in whole Zhejiang province.
I spotted a Hubei registered 04 Harley in Qingdao a few weeks ago.
Laoha, in which city do you live and can you ride your Harley everywhere in Zhejiang once you got it registered? I also live in Zhejiang and consider buying a Harley too, but can not register a motorcycle above 250cc in my hometown.
Hey… what about Guangdong province? Here the motorcicles are banned. Do anybody know something about options? THere is a way to drive a Harley Davidson here? Someone know? I live between Dongguan and Guangzhou, and i was thinking buy a car, but… it would be wonderful if there is possible to use a Harley. Since i am in China i haven´t ride a motorcycle, and i miss it SOOOO much.

You are better off getting a car if you want to travel or drive in any of the mid to large size cities. I have a motorcycle here in Zhangzhou, but I cannot drive it in Xiamen
and in a couple of years motorcycles won’t be allowed here either. If you live in the country and want to drive on the highways you might be okay, but not on the expressways as motorcycles are not allowed. Also check the legal limit on engine size. Here it is 250cc for a two wheel vehicle.
Popped by the Qingdao store today, and was promptly ignored by all of the staff. I will have to find something else to waste my cash on.
I have spoted a brans new Harley Davidson 883 Sportster Hugger in 2001 in Shangai … and again in 2007 in Beijing I spotted 2 Softail models. So yes there are Harley Davidsons in China.
