Roewe 850 – The domestic Bentley, aka Roewe R85

12 March 2009 No Comment

Further details on the Roewe 850 have emerged, including pictures which solidify the rumors that the 850 is essentially a reworked Ssangyong Chairman:

The front and rear end of the ‘Roewe 85′ have been ‘Roewe-ized’ to bring into the Roewe design fold. Ssangyong Chairmans are usually used as limos in China complete with a driver, and its expected that the 835 is set to appeal to the same market, except the domestically built Roewe R85 will cost a lot less than the Korean built and imported Chairman. The Chairman measures (LxWxH) 5150×1895×1490mm and the stretched version measures 5450×1895×1500mm.

CCT is currently unsure as to how many Chairmans are sold in China during the past year, but we can guess the number is in the low hundreds at best, if the Roewe R85 is to find itself a niche market as a basic limo it really cant be priced too high, nor too low. Our guess is that Roewe plan to target this limo at hotels and airports for VIP guests, which will put the limo directly in competition with the Geely TX4 and future TX5 taxi, which was also being pushed into the VIP customer arena.
