Geely buys Drivetrain Systems International

Geely were announced today as the successful buyer of Drivetrain Systems International. For those not familiar with DSI, they are one of the worlds largest gearbox manufacturers, and already produce six speed automatic gearboxes for use in RWD, and AWD vehicles for Ford, Chrysler, and Ssangyong. According to media reports, DSI are researching 8 speed transmissions, as well as CVT and double clutch technology.
In February 2009, DSI entered bankrupty protection, and as a result Ford of Australia where affected by the slow down in production of gearboxes. The plan for DSI now is to expand their international operations, and further enter the Chinese marketplace as a supplier to other Chinese manufacturers other than Geely.
Geely’s purchase of DSI will no doubt give them a fantastic lead over their domestic competition, and will lift them further on the international stage, especially when coupled to their upcoming 2009/2010 models.

That bloke 2nd from the left looks familiar?

Mr. Stowe, I presume?
So maybe Geely are going to get there afterall. Gearboxes are one of the big sticking points for Chinese cars. Geely seems to have scored quite a coup here. Now all they need to do is produce some decent engines and put into production the concepts they showed.
I remember that guy, 2nd from left, looks fatter than last time I saw him though, and thinner on top.
Couldn’t agree with you more Mark. When it comes to rising to the next level, gearboxes is still the ticket. While the other independents continue to plod along with their crash box manual transmissions, Geely will be far out in front. I wouldn’t have thought it possible after seeing that first ghastly Daihatsu knock-off, unabashedly displayed at Nanjing’s Xinjiekou some 7 years ago.
