BYD E6: Mashed up Honda and Range Rover.

BYD released their E6 prototype yesterday, complete with an AWD electric setup under the hood.

The most interesting thing, is the All Wheel Drive (AWD) system that BYD have set up using an electric motor, certainly not impossible, but something that hasn’t been tried on a production scale. Is this another first for BYD?

The design on the other hand, seems to be a mash up of a JDM Honda Oddyssey and a Range Rover rear end. Interesting, but somehow it works to our tastes.

Said to get 400 km on a charge, and a 50% charge in 10 minutes. Could we say it’s the first AWD pure electric anywhere?

  2. avatar Sinophile says:

Does that mean each wheel has its own electric motor?

Does anyone know where (and about when) BYD is going to place its’ first dealership in the United States?

  4. avatar BillyBob says:

No Sinophile, looks like that big powerplant under the hood is the only motor driving all four. But the concept is a good one and we are bound to see it in China with all the incentives that Beijing is offering.

    > Said to get 400 km on a charge

Given that just announced Chrysler EV minivan with 30 kw A123(The American company that BYD is accused of ripping off) battery pack claims a range of only 50 miles, 400 km on a charge is impossible, even with E6′s larger battery pack.

In fact, BYD’s previous F3DM range claim was already discredited, when it was found that real world range was half of what BYD claimed for F3DM.

    >, and a 50% charge in 10 minutes.

Don’t try a 50% charge in 10 minutes at home; you will black out your neighborhood. Try only at a dedicated charge station.

Beside, rapid charging is bad for battery lifespan. While a 4~5 year battery life might be acceptable in China, US(California) regulation requires a 10 year minimum battery warranty, so this is why BYD has been unable to land US or European battery orders, in spite of its market share in cellphone battery.

    Thanks for those insights.
Was just repeating BYD’s pie-in-the-sky claims at the Detroit show. Yes, BYD is a blowhard and such claims will only make its way into foreign markets all the more difficult. If Hyundai had preceded its Western market entry with all that hulabaloo, it would still be digging itself out of a hole.
Afterall, BYD’s products still have no real world logged miles that can back any claims whatsoever….
btw, get rid of that handle and the listening audience will grow exponentially.

BYD is not accused of ripping anything off at the moment. A123 is just tearing apart BYD’s packs to see IF they ripped them off.
    .
A123 should be one to talk, as they are involved in patent litigations with Hydro-Quebec for using its lithium-ion tech.

Hmm… Interesting coz I never heard anyone accused BYD of anything regarding to their battery technology, but car designwise it’s a bit funny.

  9. avatar mememe says:

I think BYD really has nothing to be afraid since they already dissected their battery and put it on show in Detroit and Beijing.

Where did you get that information from?

BYD’s range claims are based on a constant cruise speed of 50 km/hr at the test track, a test parameter in which most gas-powered cars would double their EPA ratings. In real world driving, half of what BYD claims are achieved.

Furthermore, BYD never tested F3DM on charge cycle and aren’t sure how long its battery would last.

What’s even more troubling is that BYD never tested F3DM on charge cycle and aren’t sure how long its battery would actually last in real world conditions.
