Chery Rely X5 – Makes us wish for the reckoning

Chery have the capability to make some great looking cars, some okay looking cars, and then some really damned ugly cars:

The Reely X5 is due to launch in the second half of this year, under a slightly pointless brand name, and with a ridiculous moniker. The only good thing about this SUV is the engine, a 2.0L Turbo.

CCT got the chance to get in this car at the Shanghai Car Show, if you thought the exterior was ugly enough, the interior is a whole lot worse. For a start if felt like the door was made from recycled Moth wings, for all of its structural integrity I think a strong wind could put a healthy dent or ding in these doors. The next step was sitting in the cloth seats – “Cloth?!?1” I hear you cry! Yes – these are cloth seats in an SUV that belongs to a luxury brand of a car maker. Perhaps in the real production models they will have leather seats, but not in this show model. The next step was to hold onto the steering wheel to get a feel for the car, it wasn’t that bad. The next step was to play around with the dashboard, and the surrounding monument to modern plastic injection moulding that Chery had assembled in the X5. It would have been good if the edges wouldnt have been so sharp, I think I could have shaved my beard by rubbing my face up against the edges of the dash. But the trunk is very big, if you’ve got very big things to lug around, and dont mind driving quite possibly the ugliest SUV in existance (it’s nudging the Pontiac Aztek in the ugly stakes here) then the X5 can be yours for a mere 150,000rmb in the second half of this year.

Now I’m really confused…Is this a Riich or a Rely?
Chery may be the first car company to ever use a verb to name one of its models. Why not Reliance, or maybe Reliable?
Well who am I to get critical…I have trouble saying my own name in Chinese.

An SUV called an X5. How original! Wonder where they came up with that name from? What’s the betting BMW won’t take kindly to it?

Haha as mark mentioned, X5. Soon they’ll be putting out a Riich Mustang 2-dr fastback made out of recycled milk cartons with 4 actual wheels of cheese.

That back end looks pretty standard for a SUV. The front end looks like they tried to keep the roundness and cuteness of the Rav4 which is an ugly car to start out with.

Is it greatwall that makes the pickup with the hood that wraps forward and has a really small grill?

Wow, just wow! And the name, too. I think I have seen that somewhere before.

But this is the old P11 from years back…the Higgo 3….by IAT, that used to have a vertical bar down the middle
    of that grille box….
oh yes, it’s back with a new name…..

Some website that covered the Dakar Rally said: “Geely, the carmaker who bought Volvo, has been present at the desert rally for a second year. Their car the Reely performend ok.”
I can actually forgive them for this. If one knows only little about the Chinese car industry (and does no confirm ‘facts’ before publishing), then Reely can be mistaken for Geely.
This just shows how much research the western press did not do.

At least nobody will claim that they copied their design =)
    That’s one way to go
