BYD’s MPV Offerings
BYD had two MPV’s on display this year at the Shanghai Car Show, one of which appeared to be a unique design, and the other was certainly Toyota inspired:
The BYD E6 seemed to have a hint of Range Rover about its posterior, but the front end look rather pleasing
The E6 is built on the same platform as the BYD F6, and will be powered by an AWD electric drivetrain. The E6 measures (LxWxH) 4554mm x 1822 mm x 1630 mm, and weighs in at 2020kg. The E6 is expected to be able to travel upto 400km on a single charge, and should see Euro sales in either 2010, or 2011.
The other MPV that BYD had on show was the BYD M6 MPV, which bares a striking resemblance to the Toyota Previa MPV. The M6 MPV is expected to be launch quite shortly, and will be available for around 150,000rmb which is an excellent price.

“The E6 is expected to be able to travel up to 400km on a single charge,…”
But at what speed?
50km
Thank you Matthew. A range of 400 kilometers sounds good, but is deceiving. Most prospective buyers need to know what the range is when driving at typical highway speeds of 100-120 kph. It’s sort of like advertising highway fuel economy specifications that are pegged to 50kph instead of 100.
Beijing is backing industry in this EV development, and so I hope they will also protect the consumer, by setting some standards with regard to these specs.
Today’s report from Gasgoo (May 5) presents this catch 22 regarding recharging capability:
BYD’s E6 sedan runs on a ferrous-ion battery – it can travel 400km per charge, but is designed for 10-minute, 50% charges, that last 200km. Charging, however, requires a dedicated, high-voltage charging station.
In other words, it cannot be charged with household voltage.
Toyota inspired…
It’s quite disturbing, and a bit funny, to see the blatant theft of other car makers designs in the chinese car industry.
