Chinese made GM’s to head to the USA

According to todays media reports, GM is planning to export Chinese made vehicles to the USA to sell in the North American market. The main cars to get exported to the USA are small cars, for example, the Chevrolet Spark.

By 2011, GM expects to start importing the Chevrolet Spark, with 17,335 cars being imported in the first year and raising the volume to 51,546 cars by 2014.

Although the first car appears to be the Chevrolet Spark, it’s expected that GM will up their imports of Chinese made GM’s to the USA, an unusual turn of events as GM is currently facing bankruptcy due to its over production of SUV’s and full size trucks. How will the UAW take this?

For many years American manufacturers have been worrying about the influx of Chinese manufacturers to the goldern shores of the USA, but who would have thought the first importers of Chinese cars would have been America’s biggest car manufacturer?

I don’t think it’s the Spark. Basically, GM’s trying to consolidate the production of global Chevrolet cars(Not trucks) to Daewoo in Korea and Buicks to SAIC ventures in China as a part of cost reduction plan. Producing Daewoo sourced cars in China for export may not be feasible because the Korean government is demanding the control of Daewoo and the return of Daewoo designed car IP as a condition of Daewoo bailout. Korean government would certainly ban production of Daewoo models in China for export(Chinese market versions permitted) after it regains control of Daewoo.

This would mean that Chevrolet A, B, C segment cars and SUVs will be imported from Korea, while Buick sedans would be imported from China.

    Naw, it’s all about Wuling’s little vans…..
Right after GM raises its stake in the Wuling-SAIC-GM venture from 34 to 49%…..
