Kerri Toloczko talks bollocks about Chery
Kerri Tolockzo wrote this article for the Dowagiac Daily (if you dont where this is, we will forgive you). If you don’t know who Kerri is, then we will forgive you for that also. Mr. (Ms?) Toloczko’s article is essentially a piss poor dig at the Chinese, the Chinese car industry and inparticular Chery Auto. Tolockzo focuses on Chery’s non existent partnership with GM, and Chery-GM plans to bring ‘The Chery’ to the USA.
Lets focus on the good bits:
If you enjoy Chinese products such as poisoned dog food, lead painted toys and toxic drywall, have we got the car for you!
Its China ‘s Chery automobile – stolen designs, flimsy construction and desperately trying to come to a dealer near you.
Yes! We love poisoned dog food, lead painted toys, toxic drywall, but what about our melamine flavored milk?
Flimsy construction? What? The Chery A3′s5 star crash tests look pretty good to us. Should we take a look at those Ford F150 truck tests again?
Chery Automobile is China’s biggest automaker and has much in common with most large Chinese manufacturers.
It is owned by the government and subsidized by the government since inception.
Are we forgetting about GM? Who owns 70% of GM today?
The first Chery cars rolled off the line in the late 1990s for export as the Chinese government was still limiting the number of cars on the road at that time.
Incorrect. Chery was started by the local government in Wuhu to kick start the local economy.
Like many other technology-based products from China, Chery’s designs were stolen, notably from South Korean Daewoo models and the Chevy Spark, a high-efficiency mini-car scheduled to arrive in the U.S. in 2011.
Chevy Spark, or Daewoo Matiz? Make your mind up on which car was stolen, as both cars are the same.
Both carmakers had negotiated at some point with Chery in a bid to bring a model to the U.S., but as part of its concession package with the United Auto Workers, GM agreed – for now – not to import the Chery.
After the Spark incident, I doubt that GM and Chery were on talking terms. Chery never signed a deal with GM to bring a car to the USA, Chrysler had plans to take Chery’s to South America, but that deal fell straight through.
Illegal government subsidies to Chinese manufacturers are widespread and huge, and the car industry is no exception.
How are they illegal? If a government starts a company, is this illegal?
Its start-up costs were absorbed by the government and is currently receiving huge subsidies from China’s stimulus plan, an additional $1.4 billion for energy-saving technology and billions more from the Chinese Export and Import Bank to boost export production.
This is called a loan, the US Taxpayer gave several millions of dollars to the US Big Three in loans. It’s okay if the American car makers get them, but terrible if the Chinese get them from their own government?
Based on history and crash testing, driving a Chinese car is roughly equivalent to adding wheels to a dishwasher and expecting it to survive a collision.
Americans always love to look at Chinese history and pluck holes in it. Lets look at the future here, Kerri, it might be hard for you to accept but Chinese cars are getting better day by day, the vast improvements from one year to the next clearly show this. The Shanghai Auto show this year showed that Chinese manufacturers have vastly improved in various areas such as style, performance, technology, safety, (but not marketing, as of yet)
Let’s not wait for the China auto anschluss – there is no time like the present for American consumers and policy makers to preemptively block these un-safe, spawn-of-cheating cars from darkening the doorstep of American roadways.
China’s death toll on the roads is rather high, but this comes down to it being a society that is taking to the roads for the very first time, accidents are bound to happen in a large number. Do we have accident statistics from the USA, or Europe from the 1950′s when these respective countries were developing their automobile culture? I’m sure the statistics would be similar.
Kerri Toloczko is a senior analyst for the Alliance for American Manufacturing (AAM) and served as a Republican appointee to the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission.
It’s quite shocking that a person who is so ill informed has managed to make it quite far.

I’m totally amazed. As written by you, it is totally unfair, that somebody who hasn’t got any knowledge about the subject he/she is writing about, can be considered as a senior analyst.
I have been following the development of chinese car industry and I’m very impressed with the velocity things are getting ahead.
I was just just yesterday watching the pictures I took at Beijing Motor Show a year ago. What has happened in one year (referring to Shanghai in April) is great. I can understand very well, that American and European; not to mention Japanese and Korean, car industry is worried.
But even so, you should be at least somehow beware of facts before writing down anything.
Toni
In a country as big as China where millions of things are made, there bound to be a few bad things. Is it fair to say all things made in China are bad? If it was, China would not be able to sell a single thing. Chinese goods today are no worse than Japanese goods in the 1960′s. Every country goes through a period of growing pain and China is no exception. Anyone remember the first Korean cars? Now, Korea make as good a car as anybody. Chinese products are improving in quality. We will see Chinese cars in North America in 5 years or less.
This guy works for AAM (Alliance for American Manufacturing). Of course he’ll write stupid shit, even if it’s untrue. What he needs to realize is that American manufacturing is going to hell, with Asian companies taking over everything (that includes China, Japan, Korea and India).
I think Kerri stole CCTs Delorean, he is predicting the future already…. “Soon to be the largest carmaker in the world, Chery sells or manufactures cars in China and over 50 countries, including Iran , Syria , Turkey , Philippines, Egypt, Uruguay and Brazil.”
“Cheating does get you there faster – and China sold 1.1 million cars in March, finally exceeding U.S. sales as our numbers dropped by 34 percent.”
“It is estimated that between 800,000 and 1 million new cars hit the road in China each day, and 80 percent of those are owners’ first cars.”
Anyone know where I can get one of the 20-30 million cars they didn’t sell but are hitting the roads each day?
Never heard of him, I probably won’t ever read any of his craps in the future anyway.
Sorry is a she!
What a stupid dumba*s, she knows absolutely nothing about the Chinese car industry. I wonder how they even allowed this person to write such articles.
good post Ash.
I’m with you on this one, with the only exception about the F150 crash test result you posted. That is a 1997 F150.
No fair taking a 12 years old crash test and compare to the results from a brand new vehicle. If you see the 2009 F150, it tops ALL the tests from the Insurance Institute For Highway Safety (IIHS).
And also,
it’s kind of known in the auto industry that chinese crash test standards are not as strict as american, or european ones…
Crash tests are not only about the speed they throw the test vehicle into the barrier. Crash tests from different countries are distinct due to the conditions needed for that country. It all depends on the speed, the material of the barrier, the way the vehicle hits the barrier, and also, how much deformation is allowed in the tested vehicle to give it a score.
So, I’m really sorry, but for me, results coming from CNAP still don’t say much..
remind me of a South Park episode where rednecks goes ” They took er jobs!”
what a load of bollocks …. im totally cracking up
OK, checked up on this person………..and it IS a she, not a he. Her full name is Kerri Houston Toloczko, and she is a extremely conservative political “talking head”. She is all about federalism and limited government (a VERY right wing person)and has appeared on a number of political talk shows in America as a “talking head”. She is very representative of the “standoffish” attitude displayed by the previous Bush administration, but currently she holds no official government post – just a “talking head”. She is just annoying, but she can’t really do much damage nowadays. Just ignore her – it’s pretty obvious to ANYONE with even a few active brain cells that she is full of s**t. I just laugh at people like this now – she simply is incapable of seeing what reality is in today’s world.
The only word to be used for such comments made by a Person who suffers from Mental Defficiency is XENOPHOBE.
The comments written by this guy are just the explicit picture of what many people think about technologies coming from other countries.
Just to have an idea, last week, Saturn was sold to Penske for a very low price, just to avoid the entrance of Chinese Automakers in their market. In Europe they sold Opel to a Canadian Group and denied to sell it to the Chinese Applicants and even to Fiat.
In the YouTube you can mostly see videos from CrashTests done in Chinese Vehicles. What about the BMW 5 Series that have had a weak result on the NCAP Test? Why does the German Autombil Club ordered a test to the Brilliance BS6?
In Brazil, permanently press says that Chinese Cars have problems in the refineshment by doing very superfitial comments, such as: “the bottons from the radio have a very weak aspect”. But have a look on the Mexican cars and even the Popular Cars produced in Brazil and make a comparison with the Chinese.
And I can tell you much more, what about the safety of the Occidental Made Cars? We have a load of VW Golfs and Audi A3 in 1998 in Brazil, destined to USA on which an accident with two cars showed that Air Bags did not work in two Golfs which feld down from the deck level they were stowed.
My friend crashed a Honda Fit and the air bags did not worked. My Ford Fusion was crashed twice and the airbags did not worked. To not comment the many other problems seen in the well developed Occidental and Nippon Cars.
Comments about stolen technologies are also a lie! What have GM to say that the most important products from their worldwide range of products came from South Korea. And the electric car, which technologie was imported when GM assumed Daewoo.
I still saying and will keep saying for many years! Technology and Know-how are just commodities! If you pay for them you will get them wherever you want at anytime!
Best regards to all,
J.I.Hosang
